• LCD Display Pushbuttons DIY

I just found these at dealextreme.com for $20 shipped each.

what if we took 4 or 5 of these, pulled the screens out and mounted them side by side... with a pushbutton switch behind each one? i would think it would be easy to manipulate the software to do what we would want, and the hardware side of things would be fairly straight forward.

i would need help with the software, so maybe if i built one for a programmer they could make it actually work? im thinking a prototype model could be a 5.25" front bay blank, it would make an ideal front panel for an htpc.

Not sure what you are wanting?
Push button behind screen, what would be on the screen?

You know, this here might actually work with those watches:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Electronic-Kit-C...item19c2729016

You could chop the watches, and wire them to the cap. controller.

Better than the touch switches from Digi Key, no?

Excuse my mspaint...

I think I understand what you are saying, each screen becomes a dynamic button that changes function based on what it is displaying, here was my quick concept drawing in mspaint..hehe..

(This concept uses 15 mini screens)

This is a good idea, more work than its worth IMO

This here would probably work even better than the watch (and it's cheaper).

http://cgi.ebay.com/1-5-Touch-LCD-2G...item27b758aae8

you could just swipe across the screen to change pictures until you get the one yo want the switch to "do"

maybe you got the idea from this?

or this?
http://www.artlebedev.com/everything/optimus-mini/

according to a thinkgeek post, they are working on a rev 3.0 on the smaller 3-button unit, it might be worth waiting for..

Not sure if Trader got the idea from those, but this thread is an offshoot of remarks he made in this thread:

ok, some other ideas-- if your going to reinvent something, you might as well use something built for it:

this is mp3car no? i could drop $40k on a lexus that has all my car computing needs.... and i wouldnt have a reason to be here.

$60 a switch is too much. those $15 ipods look perfect, im just not sure how the software would work. i would think if we could design a DIY way of making these type of button switches, people could install them in their cars on the cheap (and at the same time integrate it into our computers of course). even if i just bought those expensive pre-made switches, there still isnt a ride runner plugin for them...

you have the right idea, but thats way too many buttons. you might as well have a full touchscreen.

the idea that the buttons change appearance and function means you only need a few. like 4 or 5. enough that, ideally, they could change into a scrolling-text matrix display... for things like song titles, artist info and track info... then when you want to use the buttons maybe hit a "shift" key, which would change the scrolling text display into 5 seperate pause, play, rew, ff, and stop buttons.

just think how nice it would be if you could put all of DFX5's menu buttons onto physical keys that can change appearance just like they do in riderunner. you could even fit them all the way around the screen. leaving full functionality with a lot of added screen space.

while this is mp3car, there is only so much you can do to reinvent the wheel..

Oled version:
i used to have a Oled alarm keyfob-- it was junk-- because it was Oled, it was even more impossible to see in daylight then a normal lcd screen... it is not worth the $50..

RGB display:
this is the one i thought of when looking at this project.. transflective screen tech, and is only $35-- your saving $15 getting the watch-screen, but most of that savings will get eaten up trying to hack something together enough in the attempt to make a button out of it.. not to mention, this option gives you the specific directions on how to talk to the screen and get it to work. no-one knows if the watch screen is even re-programmable...

anyways, back to the watch-screen.. the switch part is easy-- just use a switch like this, and capture the screen, so it floats over the switch-- and just press on the screen to activate the button underneath.

the only problem here is that you will probably need to get some acrylic/glass to go over the screen, because i doubt the current screen protector is strong enough to deal with finger presses..
