  • Question on hardware setup!

    Wow its been a while!

    1) What processor do you guys recommend for a CF setup running in Dual-Zone mode? Currently I have a C2D with 4GB of RAM, which seems fast. I have been using it to test Virtual Box, and slow down seems rare. Should I consider upgrading to C2Q or is it a waste of money? The front passenger will only do things like obd2, music, sat radio, nav and anything driver based. Rear will only be able to do stuff like video, music, gaming, basically anything that is media based.

    2) I understand that CF now has a Linux version, what type of PC can I buy to run this? With my install I have the multizone system which has to create six independent zones. My idea was to build a Hexacore based system, then virtualize 5 of the zones. It works fairly well until you have to shut down of restart. With all the virtual machines having to start up, start up is super slow. When shutting down, the PC will not do so because it wants you to close each station first. I am guessing that I can work around this with some type of software autoscript type hack, but I have no clue on that stuff. So now I am leaning towards a low cost system, like the small ARM based PC units I have been seeing. Maybe that will be a better route, but can CF Linux run on such a system?

    Any help would be appreciated.

PS: These are the units I am thinking about using for independant zones. http://raspberrypi.org/

From what I remember about your goals for multi zone I think you should look into individual networked computers for each location, with a NAS device serving your media. Either ARM based ones like panda / beagle boards, or check out an apple TV. I just picked one up, and it's an amazing little box. Jailbreak done, now it runs XBMC perfectly and can play from any source, be totally customized, etc. One question, are people going to fight for audio control, or is each location intended to wear headphones? The Apple tv also would have the advantage of each passenger being able to just airplay off their ipad / iphone whatever media they carry or games in the near future.

Two users at the same time on that processor will see some lag time. Better to get to separate ones or get a quad processor./

The multizone and dual zone are two seperate systems. The dual core is only for front and shared rear, meaning everyone is locked into doing the same thing. The multizone is a hexacore setup, one processor core for each zone and 2 GB of ram for the five virtual machines, and 6gb for the host. Also has 6 sound cards. I think thats the setup you guys are thinking of. I am talking about the dual zone.

You sure? I use to run CF in dual zone mode on a AMD Turion X2 perfectly. I am not virtualizing the shared system. I am only virtualizing the mulitzone.
