    Hi all,

    Great resource this . I've been running a PC in my car for 3 years now (http://www.chiark.com/scooby/limp.asp) and am updating it all to be a bit nicer

    I've just bought a screen from DSCustoms to go on my Epia board to replace the old thing and give me more functionality... I'm now wanting to motorise the thing in and out of the dash.

    Searching has kept me busy literally for hours, and I think I'm slightly confused.

    I have a cunning hole on the top of my dash which currently has a clock mounted in it. It's big enough for the screen to lie flat (horizonally) in, and it's right in my line of sight, so...

    I want to mount the screen there, but for security reasons mount it UNDER the existing horizontal cover which the clock is mounted in.

    In short, I want to motorise this cover to hinge from the back and flip up. I then want to motorise the screen out from lying flat under the cover to be vertical. Then I want to drop the cover back down.

    What should I be considering for this? Servos seem to be most commonly talked about, but are they the right technology for this?

    I realise this is hard to visualise, so I'll take some pictures of my plan tonight

      hey... your steering wheel is on the wrong side...

      anyway... what you are saying is definately do-able, but is see some problems with your description already.

      you might consider doing this:

      flip the clock cover plate up with a hinge toward the front of the car.
      then use another motor to rotate the screen up with a hinge located toward the rear of the car.
      then as an added brace you might want to rotate the clock cover down into the back of the screen.

      this design would only use 2 motors. although you would have to provide some sort of motor controller circuit... they are availaable out there.... somewhere.


      if you are trying to get the clock cover to completely close, after the screen is open, that is also do-able, but it would require some intricate linkage design, as well as some cutting of the clock cover.

      just an idea for u to toss around.

        Servos are overkill, and require controllers to run them.

        Since you are moving from one stop to another, a regular DC motor would be all you need. If you needed to stop at different positions along the way, use a stepper.

        I might also consider pneumatics, if space is an issue.

          From what they can do, you are right on the servo's. However, a pro for these devices is their availablity and low-cost. I would not be easy to make a low-rpm and high torque dc-motor for less money.
          So a servo motor might be the best choice after all.
          Another nice thing of servo's is that these usually are supplied with hevels. That makes connecting to the tilting display very easy (quite analog to driving a rudder in a boat or a airplane).

            I don't consider servos to be low cost. Availability should not be an issue with whatever type of motor you choose. And I should have said a DC motor with gear reduction.

              Doable, but will require some clever hinging to get the cover to close when the lcd is fully "out". 2 servos, clever hinging, and the appropriate gearing and you've got it.

                Cheers all for your help so far

                The "plan" is to cut a very small D-shape out of the front of the flap, and use a rubber "grommet" flappy bit to allow the flap to still go down behind.

                Otley models, mentioned by sproggy (what's happened to him?) are just up the road from me...

                I think I need to construct this in a non-motorised form then look at automation as and when

                  I was wanting to do a similar kind of setup but comming out of a single din dash slot, so can't wait till you have yours done so I can get an idea of how it could be done!

                  Just waiting for the group buy on scoobynet now, and I can get it all finished

                  p.s I think DS customs are doing something similar to my idea, but want to do it myself to try and save some dosh!

                      Cheers for the encouragement folks - I'll definitely walk before I try running and will get the tools out to start hacking

                      I'm just writing up my thoughts on the screen and we'll try for a group buy on those screens soon

                        i have wanted to do something like this for so long. 2 scenarios:

                        1: have a lcd facing down, and then rotate it say 45 degrees for the viewing position. for this idea i was set on the stepper motor, cause i dont know how i would use a dc motor and get it to stop at the right location. just turn it off when i want it to stop? will it rotate slow enough that i can do this?

                        2: have the lcd at a 45 degree angle inside the center console, and with motors move the lcd 6 inches linerally (sp?) out of the console. The problem i am having with this is i dont know how to turn the motion of the motor into a linear motion. i was thinking about using like a belt drive on some type of racks, but i havne't been able to concieve it yet. i wish i was a senior in mech eng or something. whoever in college who learns how to make all these sweet things.

                        other problem is where do you get all the parts? like gears, sprockets, belts, chains, racks? and then to get it for something that will fit the shaft of your motor ? i have looked for a little, i just havent' found that perfect website yet. any help/comments would be appreciated! thanks guys -Ryan

                            thanks frodobaggins... i have thought of that idea, its like a car piston as well... i actually made a cardboard template that will prob work, but i was kina checking to see if there were any other ideas. thanks for you input! -Ryan
