  • Good News, Potentially Useful Info

    Hi All,
I just made some tremendous improvements to my mp3 player system tonight and I thought I would mention it here in case it can help anyone else out..

I have been using an FM modulator to get the computer sound into the stereo, and, as we all know, OK ,but not the best solution.

Well, My car STOCK stereo has the main head unit/cd player as well as a STOCK remote tape deck that attaches to it. With a bit of creative wiring and reverse engineering on the pin outs I have successfully converted the STOCK remote tape deck connector on the head unit into basically an "AUX in"..

The sound Quality improvement is INCREDIBLE.
Just for the record, there is no comparison between FM Modulation and using an AUX in.
Fm Modulation sounds fine until you hear how much better it COULD sound with Aux in.

Anyways, I own a 99 Grand AM GT..
    details at http://mp3grandam.dyndns.org.

IF anyone else there has a similar stock stereo setup, it is DEFINTELY worth your time to investigate this possibility.

Email me if you need help.
Total Price of adding 'Aux In' to car Stereo? $0.00

    Cheers!

Mantis: Yep i did same thing with my Ford Mustang Cobra. Aux is much better than FM modulator U can tell the difference very quickly. I really don't see why ppl are buying these highend stereo system when all it takes its a little bit of imagination and u can get AUX in with ur current car system. That is if it already have amps.

I agree, this option should be clearly documented somwhere in a FAQ or something.

psalmx: bull****. I believe my system in my car is just as good as any high end system out there. Ask anyone that has a ford mustang or expedition. Ask them about the system, of infact go take a look for ur self. U will see that the system is just as good.

Maybe you just have not heard a well installed high end system before...

I will bet that my MBquart and JL Audio speakers sound alot cleaner and more dynamic than 'factory' speakers do. As a matter of fact, go to Radio Shack and pick yourself up an SPL meter and see for yourself!

xa0s: hehehe....notice what i said. Just as good as some of those high end systems. Even some magazines rate the Mach-460 as one of the best system u could get from the factory.

Compare "high end systems" and "factory systems" by the power produced. My installed deck produces 45wattsx4 which sounds much better than my old factory deck, which produced around 25wattsx4. High end systems usually sound better because they produce a higher quality signal.

Having worked in car audio shops for the last eleven years I can go either way on this one. Factory systems for the most part are getting tougher to improve upon. However I guarantee that the best factory system will never sound as good as what could be done to the same car at a good stereo shop. Notice I did not mention price. I see people everyday who purchase a car and take it directly to our shop or others to waste money on equipment that will not improve the sound in their cars and in some instances will even worsen the sound. When you have decent factory equipment it takes more money to improve it. On the other side of the issue when something in that factory system breaks down it is going to hurt your pocketbook to either repair the broken piece or in most cases replace the entire system. A good example of this are the early 90's Maximas. Thousands of these cars were sold with Bose systems in them. They sounded ok compared to most of the offerings(I hate Bose personally) but this is probably one of my biggest bread winners. When one of the amps on one of the speakers craps out the customer either has to pay Nissan about 300.00 for a remanufactured amp/speaker unit or replace the entire system. There are some exceptions due to converters, intergrators and such but even if you do buy the part from the dealer you have to pay them labor to replace it and then you only get a 90 day warranty on the piece. What happens when another one goes bad? We do at least 5 of these cars a week and the funny thing is most of them belong to people who would never upgrade their stereo they just want to be able to hear sound on thier way to and from work. Another one that is getting pretty popular in our shop here of late is the Infinity J30 which has a similar system. One good thing about most of the factory premium systems is that they are designed for the particular vehicle based on acoustics and other factors. For example any car that has a Bose system started off in the Bose R&D facility in California as a shell of the car to come. There they measure the in-car acoustics and develop equalization and amplification to match that of the cars interior. The Bose amps on the backs of the speakers are not just amps. They contain equalization as well as crossovers for the speakers that they drive. Personally a big deciding factor on my vehicle purchases is what I can do to it stereo wise. I order them with the lowest available stereo that I can get dependent on the option package because I know that I can do better.

All I know is the 3 grand I put in my stereo still brings tears of joy everytime I turn it on and crank it up. I've listened to the factory on the expedition and if ofcourse lacks low end but high end was suprisingly good. Just too much midbass for me. Also lets talk about durability. Do you really think those factory speaker with straight papers cones and tweeter with foam surrounds will really last that long?

i know its hard but an after market setup is alot nicer then any oem system that i have ever heard .

not saying that the bose-460 system sounds bad at all but still not there yet.
but i have not found many oem systems with a great staging or dynamics that a well built after market system can do..

                        just my 2cents..
