  • Turn your computer on by remote control

Has anyone though of doing this ?

I saw this advertised i while back http://www.auspcmarket.com.au/review.php3?t=1561

it allows you to turn on/off and reset your computer from a keychain remote. was thinking if you used this as you were walking towards your car you could turn it on and it would have booted up by the time you opened your door (20meter range radioF)

it works on atx power supplies so i dont know how you would turn on your inverter.

maby you guys whom are good with electronics could make one cheeper and include a button to turn on your inverter also?

you also wouldnt have to go to the trouble of running wires from your computer to dash to turn on.

theres also a review here http://www.dansdata.com/jremote.htm

i think im on to something
what do you guys think ?

Yeah but depending on how much power your starter draws, your computer may be restarted when you try to start the car... None-the-less it is a very cool idea

A while ago I posted a schematic to use the AutoLoc keyless entry unit to power on the PC, and allow it to be turned off with a switch on the dash. Do you want me to repost it???

        Yer plz

        is it complicated ?

although it would be IR and not RF and wont have as much range.

I just got a remote car starter installed (a definite need for those cold canadian winters...right Aaron?) and I just figured I could probably use one of the wires that has juice going to it when the car has started!! I'd have to check it out because the radio and stuff won't work until you turn the key but the heater works... That's definitely an option!

This way, I can start the car from a distance and have the computer booted and ready when I get in!

          Any ideas?

if you remote start has extra channels on the remote i.e.- for opening the doors, turning on lights etc...then you can wire a relay to that channel and use it to flip on and off power to the CPU

My setup can be turned on/off with remote. It also automatically starts up when the car is remote started.

I have no problems with the inverter when starting the car. I suppose the 3 batteries help with that too.

Yeah but you cant turn your computer on if the inverter is turned off ?

and you cant leave the inverter on all the time caus it will drain your battery right ?

I use the auto-off device and the inverter is connected to that. So the inverter is off when the car is off. The entire electrical setup (including stereo/alarm) uses only 15mA when off.

What I meant to say was that my car can be started or not and the computer will run. It doesn't matter. I can still turn it on/off with or with out the remote.

So to answer your question, yes it can be done.

Actually, it's RF. All keyless systems are.

                        Here's the image:

Applying a momentary 12V from the keyless unit switches the player on. When you get in your car, you then turn your main power switch on. When you want to turn if off, you use your main power switch.

Actually, I hate the things . Most people don't use them properly, and up polluting like hell by idling the car for 10-20 minutes. Most cars only need a 1 minute warm up (RX-7s are an exception and should always be run 2 minutes prior to driving, then driven carefully until operating temperature reached), but a lot of people like to have the interior of the car warm before they get in. They don't realise that 1 minute of driving will warm the interior faster then 10 minutes of idle....Anyway...

AARON> Yeah, I agree! I usually turn the car on as I'm putting my shoes on or saying goodbyes... or as I walk out of a mall if I'm parked far. I see too many cars just sitting there idling long enough for the 30 minute cut off to actually turn the car off! Unfortunately, not all starters have a time limit for the car to run. Anyhow, I'm off topic a little.

I'm gonna try to use my 4th frequency from my remote to power up the computer this summer so I won't need to start the car to boot up.
Let's hope the computer doesn't reboot when the starter motor kicks in!
