  • my supercomputer.

Ok i just got this awesome servercase off ebay. It's 1u (one unit high), very thin, very heavy, very big (flatwise). It's perfect for a mini-itx mobo. Its really for the trunk of the car, only. It has a row of 4 small fans inside for excellent airflow.
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=11216

.I'm gonna build two of these, a desktop and a matching carputer, the two will vary slightly. I use the term 'super computer' because (1) it'll be an embedded fullsize computer (2) it'll be free of IE, windows media player, and all the programs in the "Accessories" tree of the start menu. Since xplite isn't out yet, I use Fred Vorck's boot cd method (Make an IE free Windows 2000 ). To me it's cheaper and better cuz you can make a customizable install cd that you can insta right on a CF card.

    Specs
a 1 or 2 gig CF card for my version of xplite(haven't really made up my mind).
a 10gig 7200 hd that uses this dual ide-to-usb internal converter.
    DUAL DRIVE INTERNAL USB2.0 CONVERTER
a 50-80gig 7200 hd that will share the usb-to-ide device with the 10gig hd
    52x external usb cd-r http://www.iomagic.com/Products/show...odID=I522452EU
    Commell LV-670 mobo w/pci riser
    P4 2.8ghz 533fsb (celeron for carputer)
    lots of ram

The carputer and the desktop systems will vary. First off, let me explain the HD situation. The cf card will hold xplite (nothing else), and the 10gig hd will be the "swap drive". Every program, ect will be save on this disk. Since the cf card has a small capacity, i'll have to use tweakxp or something so that all my 'program files' and 'save as' files will be saved on 10gig hd. The 80gig hd will store all my multimedia files (movies, mp3s).

Now i already use the ide-usb adapters on my current desktop and carputer, and they are lightning fast, i mean sick to your stomach fast. I can rip dvds and encode and burn svcds at superspeeds. But the boot time is just as slow as anyother computer. My goal for this project is to fix that.

Now the differences between the carputer and the desktop is that the carputer willhave only the 80gig hd and a 1gig cf card and no swap drive. The 80gig will function as the swap and multimedia drive. The carputer will have less ram since it's unnecessary to have all that ram. It'll also run off a slower cpu, perhaps a celeron. I will share my current external cd writer thats used in my current carputer (i'm probably the only carputer user that uses a cdrw, alot) And the carputer will be built to achieve the fastest boot time (less then 5 sec after bios). This means striping windows of all programs (IE and WMP for starters) and disabling windows services.

The desktop will be optimized to use three main programs Sonic Foundry Acid, Vegas4, and soundforge. This will be my recording studio. And will use Opera for web browsing.

      well..

Awesome case, and awesome idea to stick your carputer in that.. basically wont take up any trunk room since itll be spread over the entire bottom of it.

Your thread sucks, though. It jumps around.. forgets parts of itself, and includes details that are irrelevant to the topic. You should have discussed one of the computers. Then the other. Its confusing how you group it all into one blob of out loud thinking.

Also, insted of using a single 1gb flash card.. I'd suggest getting 4 256meg ones, and a 4 drive raid card.. then do a RAID-0 array acrossed the 4 cards.. this could prove 4 times as fast as a single 1gig card, and might not cost any more, either!

Nice, a 1U server case. I often wondered how well you could build a flat 1U system across the boot/trunk floor, with a board/false floor on blocks covering it.

thanks for the raiding suggestion. I think i'll try that. I'm pretty sure no one's ever tried that.

Judging from the pic, the height seems awfully small for a HSF. What are its dimensions and how will you cram in the heatsink?

I'd like to know if you plan on using the front LCD??
I think that would be a cool addition.
anyone know how this hooks up to the board??
                        or what you would display??
maybe heat/ current app/ current file/ or just "SUPER CARPUTER" or something like that. I enjoy this idea!!!!!!!! (makes me giggle)

I agree, what are the dimensions, how big is it??

                        Thanks

These industrial 1U racks make a racket. In order to drag enough air through to cool CPU's etc, they have planty of 1" fans.

I think it would be too noisy even in the trunk/boot of your car.

                              But good luck with it.
