  • New Project Opinions wanted!

Hi everyone! I was recommended to this forum by a friend. I am very glad to because I have found tons a great ideas, and information that will be usfull for my new project starting very soon.

The victim is a 2000 Olds Intrigue GX. It has the northstar motor and plenty of perks. The new leather seats come in on Tuesday and I am haveing the headrests on them custom embrorderd with the Olds insgnia and the words "Custom Edition" I am really looking foward to this!
Also, 10% tint will be going in next week as well.

But, before I install the leather seats, I would like to mount the computer system that will go under the passenger seat.

You can see where the CD/Tape/radio is now....that will come out and I will be putting a 7.25 LCD touch screen in there.
Also, I want to put another screen on the cealing for the kids in the back and their movies. This will probably be a 10" that I think I already have my hands on. I have a GPS antenae and software that will be used in the system. It is also full voice controllable. Otherwise, DVD and mp3 is basically all it will need to do. I have also had a suggestion to put a USB pen drive somwhere for easy Mp3 uploads.

Here are some pics of the car I took today...give me some ideas and suggestions please.

    All sounds good.
Sounds like you have already put some thought into the project, although this post most have been better posted in general hardware.

Good luck with the build and install, there are days when we all need it

Well considering you're doing what about 90% of us are doing, I think you'll find we are all in favor with your idea.

91Wiskey, welcome aboard, but please don't "cross post" i.e. posting the same message in more than a one forums. Thanks.

That would have been me. What I mean't was, it would have been better posted in here originally.

And any general questions that followed, trying to keep screen questions to the LCD/TFT forum, and Power questions to the Power supplies forum.

Sorry if it sounded like you should move it, or copy it in.

                Update: Mobo/CPU/Power Supply

So far, my choice of mobo/cpu combo is this here are some good pics of it
the poswer supply for it looks sweet. Power Supply This sweet baby mounts onto the motherboard to save space and eliminate a lot of wiring.

with the help of my friend (a mastermind a this stuff) I do belive we will start assembleing the carputer soon. We are still desiding on the mount location and design. the spot under the ac controls is ideal for the DVD/cd drive. It is 4" tall, 7" wide, and 8" deep. Thats a lot of room for just one dive. I am thinking of wiring in a USB port in there..not real sure though.

                Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

                      How much RAM?

The mobo I am getting supports up to 1 gig of RAM. In order to run smoothly a gps, mp3 player, DVD how much ram do you recommend?

You should be able to run it with 256MB-512MB just fine. What OS will you run? Linux is my choice, but I bet it's too complex for your first project, unless you are good with it already. If you are running Windows, get a single 512MB PC2100 stick and be happy. I tossed in a 512MB PC2700 CAS2 stick I had lying around, because I had it spair; I would have bought PC2100 had I been buying new. I'd have to say no to the case. Make your own case and use a OPUS PSU.. Much better

I found that with a 1.3 duron on a KT133, 512meg allowed me to run Mappoint with aGPS voice hints, eJukebox (which intern ran winamp 2.9) and Milkdrop visualisation with out any probs, on Win2k Pro. I'm planning on doing the same with the Nemhiah Epia, but with a load of services turned off, and probably Media engine instead of Ejukebox, unless the Audiosoft boys introduce a 640x480 mode.

So 512 of ram...got it. One of you used linux, and one 2k pro. Is it mostly prefferance or is one better than the other for a carputer application? Although this is not a "killer" system I am putting in, it will be killer to me and I like ease of use and reliability. Any more thoughts on the OS?

Well, GPSDrive is a wonderful opensource GPS app for Linux, but it isn't as fully featured as Mappoint which I'm using or CoPilot which is very popular on here.

I use 2k, because there are more Desktop apps on it. If I was building a server, or maybe even just a general HTPC type box, I would probably choose one of the Linux builds, and frontends.

Someone will address the lack of commercial qulaity Linux GPS apps probably by porting. When they do, I will be installing Linux and DashPC. ATM, for me, it is a matter of choice, because linux is great in some situations, only good in others, and poor in others. A Carpc is just a specialist desktop machine (if you want full multimedia), and linux is great for that, but not quite as complete as windows yet.

For a pure MP3 player, a nice light build of linu on a fast 486, or low end pentium one and a character display is sufficient.
