Hey guys, I'm currently in Australia for a semster, so before I left I picked up a VAIO XG39 series laptop for 750 bucks, and threw in an aditional 256 megs of ram. When I get home, I will be using the laptop for school stuff I guess, but that long 7.5 hour comute between home and school is just begging for a carputer!

Anywho, my thought is to use my laptop as a nonpermenent, just visiting type of carputer (gasp!) I figure I could just get the car adapter to power it up, get a delorme gps setup(eventually...i'm gonna be broke from my 6 months of traveling the world, and i'm planning on building an HTPC when I get home as well), and i figure I can just get one of those FM modulators to do the audio since my clarion head unit doesn't have an aux connection. I'm wondering if I should go with the AudiaX Unlimited or just simply go with the ol' 25 buck Irock. I had an fm modulator once that was truly awful so I don't want to deal with a crappy fm modulator again, but I hear the irock is pretty decent.

Software wise, I was wondering if anyone ever just set up their laptop with 2 windows xp users...one that would be my regular old stuff for school, and one profile that would autolaunch my carputer software...Any hints or thoughts on this?

My main concern is where do I put my laptop? I drive a big old 78 Caddy Sedan Deville automatic, so I do have a lot of room. I want it up in the front with me, and I guess I have a few options....
Put it on the drive shaft hump on the floor where it would be probably easier to mount, but then I'm looking at the floor....thats probably not a safe/good idea.

I could go super ghetto and just plop it on the seat next to me....thats not that great because A) it looks like a laptop on a seat, and b) sometimes people like to sit in that seat.

The other option is to get some sort of Laptop tray type mount thing that could be bolted to the formentioned hump, or maybe hung from the dash?? I'm really leaning towards this option, except for the fact that these things seem to be DAMN EXPENSIVE!

So, has anyone succesfully implemented a system like this without blowing their wad on an expensive well constructed piece of mounting equipment? I'd like the tray to just fold away when I'm not using it, so if there are any economy engineers out there that can think of a good solution....let me know for sure!

Woohoo, look at this high-end piece of electronics! It should do the the job, and 17 bucks beats 59 bucks for overpriced sony parts in my book!

    And......It's even cheaper on EBAY!

I promise to stop answering my own questions after this!

Please don't flame me for asking questions that have been asked in other forums before, I have searched, but couldn't come up with answeres that suited me.....i dunno maybe I'm an idiot but that's beside the point.

Anyone forked over the $1 for the plans for this? Looks right up my ally budget wise, and hopefully might actually suit my needs!

        Using Talisman

Ok, Talisman is gonna be my way to go. No offense to the developers out there of Autoplay and MediaEngine, your pojects are good...just not what I need.

Talisman is really simple to get started with, and is allowing me to create a really nice (IMHO) big and legible frontend. Talisman runs as a shell replacement on a secondary WindowsXP user account so if I want to use the laptop as a carupter, i boot up and chose that profile, no sweat.

I am just getting started with it, and have put a few hours into developing my frontend. I'm designing for the future so my GPS and XM buttons will do nothing for now, but they're there anyway.

When I click the MP3 or DIVX buttons I want to launch a form that holds a list of either movies or MP3 playlists.(Thanks to the autoplay playlist builder) So basically these lists will just show the contents of a folder "C:\playlist\" ,etc.

I'm having some issues as you can see in making the contents of the folders appear large and nice looking...seems to be a minor setback in this version of talisman...or my ineptitude in understanding Talisman.

Anywho, software end of this carputer is coming along nicely, now i just need to figure out how to mount the laptop. I found some interesting plans to modify a TV wall mount.

Looks OK, but not great. If anyone has any of the EBAY plans, please share!!!

So thats where I am at now, check out theese screenshots to see what my Talisman setup looks like so far.
