  • 6'' sharp LCD

    How good is the sharp 6'' screen from eio? Is it hard to assemble and is it worth the estimated $160 it costs to put the thing together? If I made a 4x20 LCD screen , is the 6'' screen much harder? If I can read schematics decently, is it hard to do ? Are there any eaiser alternatives.

    IMHO, the 6" LCD TFT is the best bang for the buck. I bought the preassembled version, but have pulled it apart for mods once. There is no more than a dozen connections you need to solder, to have a complete unit (with the additional parts req'd. If you can do a character LCD, you'll have no problems with this one, following the help available on eio.com.

      I have been working with EIO since they received the shipment of Sharp 6" LCD screens... in fact I was the first person to get to "tinker" with one of them. They're not hard at all to get working with a composite (TV-out) video signal.

        Along with the $99 LCD, what else do I need? can I just but the prefabricated power supply and inverter? Is that it? How do I get VGA into it?

          The Sharp LCD is very bright (even in areas with bright ambient light) and very sharp (excuse the pun!) with a composite video signal. I was amazed the first time I fired one up connected to a VCR when I helped a guy install one in his custom Honda accord.

          The LCD comes in a bare, open-frame form-factor. In order to get it working, you will need:

          1) A backlight inverter for the fluorescent backlight. Jameco and Digi-key sell these, as well as FRY's. Be sure to get the 12V input version with DUAL lamp output (the Sharp 6" LCD has two horseshoe-shaped CCFL lamps inside)

          2) A +12V to -8V DC converter. I have several schematics for doing this on my website. The -8V is needed as a bias voltage for the LCD's controller to drive the pixels.

          3) A +5V source. This is for the LCD's logic circuitry.

          4) An enclosure to house the LCD and associated electronics.

          If you already have a PC switching PSU, you can get +12 and +5 right off the connector to the motherboard or one of the drive connectors. You can regulate the -12V from the PSU to -8 with a 7908 3-terminal voltage regulator and a couple of capacitors. The entire LCD draws a little under 12 Watts (1A @12V) total, so you should be able to power it without problems.

          To encase the LCD, pick up a suitable plastic or aluminum enclosure that fits your tastes and space constraints.

          Be aware that the CCFL inverter may be small and run from +12V, but it is capable of generating over 800V on the outputs, so BE CAREFUL! I'd hate to see someone get hurt from taking my advice on this LCD.


          After you have everything connected, all you need is a composite video signal and you're set! The Sharp LCD does have RGB inputs, and the datasheet says these are for 8-color digital video only, but some people have been able to feed a VGA signal to the LCD without needing a VGA -> TV converter box, but I don't have any info on hand. Check a search engine for more info.

          BTW: You can connect a couple of potentiometers to some of the pins on the LCD to adjust the brightness and contrast of the image.

          I hope you found this info useful in deciding whether or not to use the Sharp 6" LCD. Let me know if you need a pre-assembled unit and we can work something out.

              How good is the sharp 6" LCD for displaying GPS info using Street Atlas and a Delorme GPS? If it isn't good can anyone suggest a good display for GPS and good hookup instructions.

                They seem safer than one built myself and have cheap RCA jack hookup things. Of course I would assemble it myself though and not spend $50 or something. The total should cost around $160 right? All I would need then is an el-cheapo video card with RCA outs. I found one at pricewatch.com for about $30 . Then I would need a riser card to keep the dimensions small.

                  JJohnston: i would be very interested to know your method of connecting the potentiometers to the TFT, for adjustment of the the brightness and contrast of the screen, specifically the pinouts. Last time i popped it open i couldn't make head or tails of it, other than to note several factory screw adjustments on the monitor itself.

                    Are there any 6'' LCD kits? Also, does anyone have detailed schematics on how to connect the power supply and inverter? Also, how do Iconnect the RCA thing?

                      I really suggest that anyone that doesn't really know what they're doing not try and make one of these screens go.. as Jason pointed out, the inverter pumps out 800V.. you can easy die from that ****.. I am going to look elsewhere for an LCD, because I don't really think I am capable..

                        inmytree ,I agree. Im 16 and I plan to live to a ripe old age. I even encountered some trouble with the 4x20 LCD. I burnt myself several times (not having prior soldreing experiance ) and shocked myself with the power supply. Id have to ask a friend to help me with the 6'' if I got it. Right now Im researching cheaper, preassebled LCDs, try http://www.partsexpress.com
