• WinAMP as a shell

How do you do this?

• #2
Open your system.ini file (Run -> sysedit.exe) and find the line that says shell=explorer.exe. Replace explorer.exe with winamp.exe (you'll probably need the full path, usually c:\winamp\winamp.exe or something similar). I must warn you that when you do this, you won't be able to run anything except WinAMP. If you want to boot into the Windows shell, you'll have to edit system.ini in DOS mode to say explorer.exe again.

Similar to JupiterX's solution, i just added the path of the winamp.exe to the autoexec.bat file, ie.

PATH=c:\dos;c:\windows\;c:\progra~1\winamp\

(remember the dos 8.3 file conventions when doing this)

and then in system.ini deleted SHELL=Explorer.exe and replaced with SHELL=winamp.exe and voila! Winamp on it's own.

One thing I've found helpful in fiddling with the SHELL= variable is to comment out the line (place a semicolon ( as the first character on the SHELL= line) instead of deleting it. Then I can just switch my comment marker ( and reboot the system back into normal Windows for testing/debugging and to get access to explorer again for copying MP3s from my home system to my car PC.

Sure, check it out:

Open up the SYSTEM.INI file in your windows directory (usually c:\windows) with notepad or another text editor (DOS EDIT works fine too)

To boot normally, do this:

[boot]
oemfonts.fon=vgaoem.fon
system.drv=system.drv
drivers=mmsystem.dll power.drv
shell=Explorer.exe
;shell=c:\program files\winamp\winamp.exe
user.exe=user.exe

And to boot straight into WinAmp with no desktop icons or taskbar, do this:

[boot]
oemfonts.fon=vgaoem.fon
system.drv=system.drv
drivers=mmsystem.dll power.drv
;shell=Explorer.exe
shell=c:\program files\winamp\winamp.exe
user.exe=user.exe

It's that simple and it works fine for me
The exact lines and location of the "SHELL=" setting may vary as this is from my COMPAQ PC at work.
