  • Simple but effective alarm??

How about mounting one of these in the MP3 case, so when something from the back of the player is unplugged, the siren goes off?? You could have a small battery in the player to power it... No-one is going to run off with a screeching box under one arm, are they??

    It runs off 6-12volts at 250ma, and is rated at 108dB @ 1m, 3000Hz

Well, if it is at 30KHz, then no one will hear it. Human hearing tops out at around 22KHz. However, all the dogs in the neighborhood would know someone was taking your player...

I think it's 3000hz and at that level, it's one hell of an anoying sound...

            good idea ..
(my car just got broken into the other day ..)

how would you trigger it? and how would you keep it from going off if you where to take out your computer?

perhaps have it triggered if the power supply is disconected and have a key to arm / disarm it?

Even if the cables were cut or snapped, it would still go off because the circuit would be broken...

                    is 3000Hz lowish?
No, it's almost the same tone we speak at, maybe a bit higher..
But it's really loud as as the sound-volume Doubles with each 3dB..
(and so to say that a sound-volume is almost 10x as hard when it increase by 10db)

I think it's a good idea, but you may want to take a siren that is a little more louder.. (say like 115db or maybe even 120db.. distance 1m)
This way they really can't take it under their arms because it hurts their ears) (but at this frequency. it's a really anoying noise)
I think with 108dB you're still able to take it and run away.. Face it.. How many people react to a car alarm these days...
Just make it so loud that they really can't run away with it...

                    Greetz..

And if you use some Rechargeable Batts in it you would probably not have to worry about changing the battery all that offen maybe using a old cell phone Batt

if u wanted more volume, you could always wire 3 or for up in parallel

also, what is the size and price of these things....

It is designed to mount flat with a surface, I think....

you could also make a small circuit so that when you unplug the player the car horn blasts for 30seconds..

I got a small Piezo Siren from Partsexpress.com last weekend.
Its so loud that you hear it inside your head. It hurts really badly.
