  • force xp to rescan usb devices?

Does anybody know a way to force XP to rescan/reset all usb devices? Or through a helper application?
Sometimes after startup/reboot my usb gps does not get recognized. I have to manually remove the usb plug and insert it again to make it work.

Use devcon.exe to unload and reload the Devices. I am using that to reset my D-Link usb radio.

        Thanks SportivoWISH!

Would you run this command line utillity by 'hand' every time at boot/hybernate?
Or is there a way to automate it?

I just got the D-Link Radio, guess that needs resetting than as well...

Confused, you have the same problem with D-Link or GPS?

I think the command line options relate to specific device numbers.
In other words, is it possible to make a script that runs at boot/hybernate
to reset/rescan all USB devices that works on different machines?
I have the feeling some other M 10000 users could use it too.

I'll get to the bottom of it tonight and post back. Don't wait up all night.

          Forcing XP to rescan devices

Right click on your "My Computer icon on your desktop on in the start menu and select properties. Your system properties dialog box pops up. Go to the hardware tab and click on the "new hardware wizard" . when the wizard strts follow the step until the computer starts scanning for new hardware. At this point it will locate the usb devices and automatically install drivers. You may cancel the wizard at any time after it locates your missing device as you will not neeed to go through alll the steps . Hope this helps. Let me know

USB devices not detected at startup or resume is a known bug in Windows XP and Windows 2000. Windows 2000 SP4 solves this, and the next as-yet-unreleased Service Pack for XP does the same. Until that service pack is released, there is a standalone patch for XP that fixes it, but you have to ask Microsoft for it, it doesn't seem to be available otherwise.

Components of my setup takes up way more than 250 characters and no matter how I tried to make it fit here it just wouldn't so please check my page.
Some of the popups that your webpage loads cause Netscape to lock up.

And I clicked around for a while and still found no information on any computer. Edit: found some pics on page 2, but no info. Care to elaborate on your setup?

Every time I try to use my D-Link after standby/hibernate, the computer will BSOD and restart itself. I haven't yet tried unplugging it and plugging it back in after it resumes from standby...will try that tonight.

It gets annoying, as it always seems that the time i want to use the radio is after the system's already gone to and resumed from standby.

My Sapphire GPS mouse is perfect, couldn't be any happier with it. Almost instant lock, and works perfectly after resume from standby.

I have writtten a batch file to unload and reload the Device Driver, activate it via a touch of remote using Girder. It is working perfectly.!

Rescanning doesn't work, u need to Disable the Driver, Re-Enable it.!

It has already been fixed on XP SP1. The D-Link Driver is not a true XP driver, therefore it is still giving problem upon system rebooting from hibernation.

No it hasn't been. The page I linked specifically states that it IS a problem on XP SP1. Re-read it.

Fix the OS, and I bet your hack will not be necessary. Not to say hacks are bad.

I have internet explorer and my fair share of popupsbut I never get any when visiting my page . Anyway it is time that I updated it.

I currently have a epia m1000 motherboard, lilliput 7" touchscreen monitor, Western Digital 40 GB hard drive, IO Magic DVD +/- RW Drive, Delorme earthmate usb gps reciever, 2 jensen 6.8 " monitors in headrests, Panasonic DVD player with 9" monitor, Pyle 3" monitor I'm trying to shoehorn into my rear view mirror, XO vision TV tuner and a panasonic head unit with the dvd and computer going into the aux inputs.
Operating System : Windows XP Pro
Software include Street Atlas USA Deluxe, Media Engine, Sprint PCS Networking software (to connect to my cellphone and go online).

Thats a jist of what I have running right now. I also had a palm Tungsten T3 running VNC software to control the desktop from the palm but I sat on it and broke the screen a couple of weeks ago.

Those are not hacks, but workaround methods.

When the System goes to hibernation, the D-Link USB Driver sleeps as well. Upon rebooting from hibernation, the D-Link USB driver doesn't wakes up, but the others does, so it is the Driver's fault, not XP's. If you still think it is XP's fault, all the devices under the same USB controller will fail as well. Think logically and not read blindly.

note. the D-Link XP Driver isn't digitally signed by MS..
