  • New Improved ATX Shutdown Unit!

    Hi carputer dudes,

Im currently in R&D of a new ATX Shutdown Controller and im looking for any peoples comments on what they would like to see featured in it as i plan to make it avaliable to purchase as a fairly low cost unit.

    Currently it is Micro Controlled,
Such features are that once the power off command has been initiated via an external button the unit can recognise if the system has been shutdown after a given period say 30 secs to 60 secs this is a normal ATX Command Shutdown, if not then forcing the system to power down, this guarentees that the system will not sit there pulling amps while your unaware the system is still running, thus saving vital cranking amps. two inputs are currently avliable one for normal power up/down the second for reset (hard reset) and the third will be software controlled power down, i.e START MENU ---> SHUTDOWN, so what ever way you turn off your pc this will shutdown everytime.
Im looking at controlling it via the comms port proberly serial alough usb would be nicer much nicer then i could add option 3 and also other features such as timed power downs and timed power ups or even power down if no power from acc on the key barrell for a period of time, would be nice for just popping in for 10 mins and not having the system shutdown for that period of time the length could be set on the fly.

Anymore comments or suggestions would be gratefully recieved, also is anybody interested in such a unit?? (Why would i bother designing one if nobody wanted one :S )

Im in the process of optimising the code for my shutdown controller. Its to be called advance shutdown controller.

The hardware design has not been finalised yet, but that shouldnt take too long.

Ill publish the source code and the full circuit diagram together with the PCB layout as soon as Im done. Im hoping to get everything done up within 2 weeks.

I guess you be selling yours?

These are the features on mine :
        -------------------------------

Based on a single PIC design

Shutdown on low battery (shutdown PC or wont startup if battery is low)

Ignition start up (infinite on-time on ignition on)
Ignition delayed shutdown (delayed shutdown on ignition off)

Central locking start up (timed on-time after the door has been opened)
Central locking delayed shutdown (delayed shutdown after the door has been locked)

Remote control start up (timed on-time when triggered by the car alarm AUX remote, useful when turning the PC on from house)

User button start up (timed on-time, this also act as a normal on/off button for the PC, user may wanna turn on/off the PC without having to use the ignition key)

Resettable on-time (the on-time can be extended by any of the startup source if needed)

Optional AUX output (can be used to turn on an AMP/monitor after the PC has booted up)

PC on detect (detect if the PC is on or off by sensing the power on LED of the PC)

Status on tri-colour LED (show if the PC is on, shutting down or low on battery)

Program mode (program the controllers behaviour)

Configuration on EEPROM (all user selectable option are stored on EEPROM, will stay there even if the supply is removed)

All on-time and delayed shutdown are programable via user button. The on-time/delay can be programmed by the user button from 1mins...1hr to infinite all definable from 4 presetted values.

Everything has already been coded and working, I may still add or remove feature as I optimise/test it for bugs.

          Was that for me

Anyway, no mine wont look like that...but it should still be small.

SMD is not really suitable for home builders so Ill stick to common components

That sounds pretty cool! And you'll have open source! That is cool too. I am planning two versions at the moment. One will replace the old one without adding many features except for the pulse on turn on.

The new one will be able to sense the battery voltage, the current that the system is drawing, the temperature of the environment, Both have the over voltage, reverse voltage protection. Both of them will include a fuse. I only have one LED, but I have it blink to indicate the state, blinking a few times indicates on or in a timer, etc.
All of it will be in a microcontroller and written in C.

The more expensive version will draw less than a milliamp in the off state with the processor asleep. The other one will draw 3 milliamps in the off state.

Is that like an automatic toilet seat? (controlled by an Atx computer...)

Or maybe it is for constipation. I can see the constipation adds already.

                That was pretty funny.

WOW...I thought I got everthing covered. But the ammeter and temp feature need to be interfaced with the PC? Im trying to avoid PC interface for some reason

Yes Ill put the source code here. Im still putting comments, renaming registers/flags, cleaning the code up...its not easy and its all in assembly language.

i'm confused... what shutdown controller would i need if i want to use it to power an inverter, which powers a computer? or would i need to get 2 shutdown controllers, 1 created to work with AC?

A basic shutdown controller would just turn the power to the inverter via relay and press the power button on the motherboard...this start up the PC.

On turning off the ignition (after a delay) the power button on the motherboard is again pressed...this then shutdown the PC. After a few second (enough to shutdown the PC properly) the power to the inverter is then cut off.

                      Hope that thats clear

I'd like to see an amp turn on/turn off control.

This is the funniest thing I've read in a long time! I have been laughing uncontrollably for the most part of half an hour.

I can't decide whether its a laxative or an anti-diarrheal!

                          Cheers,
