  • explain to me firewire please

I am having a hard time networking two XP HP computers. I use my router but it keeps assigning them the same IP's and there is an error. They both have firewire ports and i'm hoping that i can just get a 5 dollar cable from BB or something and it will allow me to transfer 18 gigs of music and DIVX's. Is there anything i need to know (like will it even work). I am not very knowledgable on networking, i thought hooking up both computers with CAT5E to both ethernets would network them together...turns out it isn't that easy. Is firewire (or are there any other suggestions?)?

with ethernet .. you need an "crossover" cable to connect both pc;s directly to each other .... or you need 2 patch cables (just normal straight cat5 UTP cables) and a ethernet HUB .....

just go into the "network connections" in control panel ... there you will see the firewire connection (not active pobably) your modem internet dailp (if you have that) and you will also see .. "local area connection" and below that you see the name of the network card (eg REALTEK or 3com or whatever)

you open that up .. and assign an ip manually for each of the pc;s (go into the properties of "local aera connection" , the one of you network card , and then go into properties of "tcp/ip" its in the white box scroll down to find it ... or youll see it right away)

set the first pc (any) to ip 192.168.0.1 , subnet 255.255.255.0 and gateway with nothing , dns also nothing (empty)

the second pc (any) to ip 192.168.0.2, subnet 255.255.255.0 ..... and gateway and dns empty (like before) ...

    if you have a hub .. you can do this with as many pc;s you like .....(keep couning ... 1 2 3 4 5 ... etc ...)

make sure "file and printer sharing" and "microsoft client for" is enabled ... and then just go into the search thing in start ...and tell it below to search for computers ..... (or just click on search ... in the connection window .. it will select "computers" automatically) and then enter the other pc;s IP .. the one you want to find ... lets say you are on pc 192.168.0.1 , you will then have to search for 192.168.0.2 (and visa versa) ...

the folders you want to transfer ... you will have to right mouse click on .. and share them ......sharing etc .. you can find that..

    hope it helps

Just plug both PCs together with a firewire cable. A firewire network connection will be created that will be tons faster than ethernet.

      Cheers,

I think this is what you need, $13 plus shipping. At best buy, the cheapest firewire cables they sell (that will work for your application) are $28.

remember to get a 6pin to 6pin cable
