  • USB LCD contol module

I just went to my friends house and I found a LCD control module that hooks up to his monitor and plugs into a USB port. My first thought was "perfect for the car" but now i need to find the right drivers for it. But if this thing works I am definetly getting me one of these. it has the basic play buttons from a player plus additonal 5 buttons and a volume knob. i cant wait to get the darn thing working. I just wanted to share this, hoping maybe some of you will have the driver or something or maybe you can get one yourself.

I saw one of those before at a surplus salvage yard... it had a digital volume control and several buttons, plus a 20x4 LCD in it... unfortunately the company was under contract to destroy the units and they would not sell one to me I believe it was made by Toshiba for a multimedia control device...

Yep, it was for the Toshiba Infinia home desktops (remember the ads a few years back?) I have two Infinias, but their USB control things didn't have the LCD. I've tried to hook one up to another computer, but Win98 doesn't recognize it, and I can't find drivers on Toshiba's site.

Kane and Chris, If you post the exact model of Infinea, I have a friend at Toshiba that *might* be able to locate some drivers. He might not, but it's worth a shot.

I actually have one of these- i bought it for $10 at a computer show. it has a 240x64 dot matrix lcd with the T6963c controller chip. I think it came with the infinia 7201 PC. there are drivers for this at toshiba's web site, but they made every machine I installed it on crash. I think that these were set up to be used only with the toshiba (proprietary of cours) hardware like tv tuner and stuff that came with these machines.
If anyone can actually figure out how to get these things to work in 95/98/ME on a non toshiba machine I would definitely be interested.

I checked with my friend, and he asked around a little. They stopped offering the accessory because of instability. Toshiba couldn't even make the thing work right all the time. He said a support guy laughed and knew exactly what he was asking about, then told him he's out of luck. The drivers actually interface between the esternal control unit and hardware on the Motherboard that controls the actual functions. So unless someone wants to take one apart and write some software, I'd say they won't work.
