  • Seagate 2.5'' 100GB HDD

According to tecchannel.de the Momentus 5400.2 will be available in 100GB, 80GB and 60GB versions. The 100GB model uses two platters while the other models only need one. All versions will be spinning at 5400rpm and there's a choice between 2MB Cache and 8MB Cache. According to Seagate these new drives don't use more power than today's 4200rpm drives.

just as a reference, the 40GB drive of that product line is almost $130:

those above are going to be like $300-400 at least!

I don't think it is worth spending that much money on a HD, though

I just bought the 40 Gig 8 MB cache Momentus from Dell last week for $97.16, but I agree with your point. I just couldn't justify spending $215 for the 60 Gig 7200 Hitachi drive. Seagate has to be realistic about pricing if they expect to sell any of these drives.

                  I bought a 60G 5400rpm for my laptop about 6 months ago for $120. The 7200rpm 60g and the 80g 5400 rpm were still $300 then.

Seagate will be realistic...they will stick them in existing laptops and their own external harddrives. That's where the majority of any sales of laptop harddrives comes from. How many people do you know replace their laptop harddrives then their desktop harddrives?

Reason why i am removing the 60GB HDD from my new laptop for an external MP3 drive. :-)
