  • Howto: Removable Hard Drive

I am curious how everybody has managed to put a removable hard drive in their carputer. I was considering using a 2.5" hard drive in a USB external enclosure. However, I have to consider keeping it from bouncing all over the car, yet still able to be easily removed without a lot of hassle. Also, would the USB device be bootable? Is firewire a better answer for that? Thanks in advance for any advice.

the device is bootable if your mobo supports it

grab some velcro straps that wrap AROUND the case and strap it down, bungee cords, tons of options really

I have an external 3.5" drive connected via USB to my laptop. It's not bootable, but it sure as hell is fast!

I mounted a 2.5" drive in my c134 case. The case itself is held in a oem storage cubby by oem straps. I just remove the whole thing if I want to work on something.

I thought about going the USB route but couldn't get XP to boot from a USB disk. For a second disk (i.e. media only) USB or firewire would be the way to go. Just velcro and/or strap it down (standing on it's side is best according to many posts here).

Velcro straps! Brilliant! Velcro has to be second only to duct tape in the most versatile tool you can own . Has anyone actually had any luck in booting USB or firewire using Windows XP? If so what motherboard was used?

instead of velcro, why not use that new 3m plastic velco stuff (clear hook and loop fastener), it has something like 10lbs of separation strength per square inch...i know that you can get it from radioshack...used that to hold my dad's xm reciver to his dash so that he can use it in multiple cars.
