  • Write protect the hard drive?

I'm not going to go into details as to why I would want to do this, but here's the deal.
I really need to write-protect an external IDE drive.
A software method would be ok. I 'd all over the place but could not find any solution.
I heard that there is a special byte in the HDs boot sector that disables/enables write protection. I need to somehow switch it on.
You guys know anything about that?
Man, I solve one problem, another pups up.. my system is completely weird.
You know, if I can't finish what I'm hoping to finish by the end of this week I will simply make a new carputer with modern components. Low-budget systems suck

Thanks! I'll give it a try.
Do you have a website for this one?

        Nope, that didn't quite work
I forgot to mention that the drive I want to write-protect is an external IDE one connected via PCMCIA.

You can't write protect it on an ide interface and then put it on the usb enclosure?

I guess I could. However, when I run it I just get a blank DOS screen for a fraction of a second and before it closes. No text, no nothing. Nowhere to choose which drive to write-protect. There is one more utility on the website that you gave me, however it will not work on partitions and my drive is partitioned (since I use FAT 32 and my drive is bigger than 32 GB).
            Thanks for your help though

Thanks for your trouble Seth, I appreciate it
But luckily I managed to find a workaround to my problem, so I don't need write protection anymore
Finally I can pack my carputer back in the car, where it belongs.

Get partition magic, this will allow you to write protect your drives
Check out my hopefully useful site...

It's still under design but it is functional

Already have it - there is no such option there
