  • External Hard Drives

Not too long ago some one asked if any one used an external Hard Drive. I would like to but can't seem to get my computer to recognize my external drive. I bought a External 80GB HDD from dealsonic.com and when I connect the computer says the device is workin and all but I don't see an Icon under
"My Computer" and cannot access the 500+ files on the HDD now, or put anything on it. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? By the way the OS is win98

        - Configuration Panel
        - Administrative Tools
        - Computer Managment
        - Under 'Storage' select 'Disk Managment'
        - Right Click on the drive you see that is not showed in explorer, and then you hve options to get your HD running. (I don't know exactly how these options are named)

are you booting from the drive? or just using it for storage?

if you're just using it for storage, you might not see it because there is no drive letter assigned to it.

Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management

Now, in the column to the left, under "Storage", click on "Disk Management"

This will show you all the drives connected, if you see the drive there, but there is no drive letter, select it, right click, and go to "Change Drive Letters And Paths"

From there assign a drive letter to the drive.

After you have done so, it should appear under "My Computer"

what file system are you using on the external drive? NTFS maybe? If so that's not gooing to work in Win98 without another app.

                    Could Be Defiler

If that is the case D, do you have any ideas on the third party app I would need or where I could get it? the think was formated for 2000/ XP But I thought I heard that the newer format (NTFS) was backward compatable.

I am guessing that you want the stuff on the drive? if not why not just delete the partition and reformat the drive with FAT32, if you do need the stuff you can try this program

Oh, and NTFS is most definately NOT backwards compatible. It is the default format if you set this up on 2K or XP, and Windows 98 cannot read it. But if you format it on 98, then 2K and XP can read it no problem.
