  • Powering USB Hub

Anyone know of a good way to power a USB hub in the car? I have gone over the limit of bus powered devices. The documentation that came with my hub is really bad, all it says is that it requires 5V, however the AC adapter it came with is 6V @ 2000 mamps. Does this have to be a regulated power source? It is okay to tap 5V off the computer PSU and run it into the hub?

If the adapter is 6V, it sounds like the hub has internal regulation. Therefore, the 5V from the computer supply may not be enough overhead. Try regulating a 12V source down to 6V using the 7806 regulator. It will do up to 1.5A with a good heatsink, and only requires a few capacitors to function properly.
