  • Reverse parking sensor..... look!!! Comments??

I've been looking into a sensor that can be added to an in car pc to be used when reversing like some cars already have. I think a realtime webtime is over kill as I just want to know how close I am to the car behind. Has anyone seen this before or even installed it into their vehicle???

I have, works fairly well. I got mines off of ebay. Intergrated it into a carputer??? I have no idea how to do that or if it's even possible. Depending on which one you'll have, they may either look good or horrible.

I'm thinking more of a camera mounted on the top aiming to the bottom to see how much space and how the area looks while parking. These sensors is nice when it's a ideal parking space, otherwise, it's not gonna help much.

i think its a good idea for a project, they sell beepers at circuit city but they want like $80 for it i think. Im not sure about the one that you posted, but Im sure that there is one that can be interfaced to a PC with a little time and effort that somebody has to put in :-D

I think it would be neat too, if you could use it whilst driving to see how far the person behind is, with the speed taken from GPS, you could calculate if they were more then 2 seconds, or if you were following too closely for speed without judging yourself. With mappoint you may also be able to put a drawing on a map of the cars infront of you and have the drawing move as you do... - just a thought tho.
post any links to sensors that you may have - im not sure of the range on these things so all of this might not be feasable thats why its just a thought.

I built one of these back in high school. Instead of having the buzzer, you could wire that into a serial/parallel port. It only works at a user specified distance and it isn't weather ready. To me a $10 webcam seems to be more of a realistic avenue even though it seems to be overkill.

I've researched a bit more & it looks like the sensors they put on the back of Mercedes & the like use piezo speakers & sensors. Take a look at this diagram. Anyone with a bit of electrical know how care to explain more before I jump head first.

Or use it to automatically detect when someone is following too close, then drive an LED sign in your back window saying "back off moron".
