  • RE-solder USB?

My USB connector got bent at a 45 degree angle. Plugging that in fried my old mobo. So I need to repair the usb connector.

Can I REpair the connection like this..?
I need to get a usb extension cord.. like 3 ft or somthing. Take apart my current broken end connector and solder the 4 wires that come off the usb onto the usb extension cord that i will also take apart...

    Does that sound right,
Am I risking frying more things??

The cable on my usb-ide adapter got bent at 90 degrees, and now all 4 wires seem to be connected. I'm going to be doing this exact thing tomorrow, then I should have my DVD drive working again.

A lot of usb wires are small...I mean REALLY small. Soldering those things nicely is annoying...I'd suggest you use something anchored to the outer insulation to protect against accidental pulls, depending on the wire size they may break really easily.

Yes, it will be very easy to fix, just 4 wires and if you know how to solder you should be set. Color codes are usually an industry standard. Make SURE to insulate ALL of the wires with good heat shrink. I would also reccomend coming out about a foot on the new section of cable, so your joints are not right at the usb plug. Keep it back a ways to prevent any bending problems.

Well I didn't need to re-solder mine, none of the wires were bad

But it's real simple to do

I think you will also need to solder the outside chasis of the USB plug to ground. Im pretty certain USB also uses that as a sort of '5th wire'.
Have a look on the board where the plug was soldered on, if you see a track where the mounts are then you will need to do the above mentioned.

....is there anyway i might be able to solder on a new connector.... using only the wires coming from the cable...?

I really don't want to buy a new GPS

just splice the wires inside the insulator on the cable and solder them directly onto the board if you like.
Personally I wouldnt do that and id have some sort of plug there instead of a static connection. Even if you cant find a USB connector, just use any other sort of 5 pin connector (including the chasis for ground).

So your saying... cut my current cable.... solder on a new cable that has a new connector on it, and then plug in. Right?

if so... How can I tell which wire is which?

Colour code. there should be a red (+ve), black (-ve), green (data+), white (data-). and a braded sheeth (earthing).

Just a question, how did you bend it?

everything is mounted on a hinged board in my trunk. It was fine in the upright position, but when the board slipped down to the down position. there wasnt enough slack in the wires
