I'm not usually a proponent of pre-made carputers, but that looks freakin' awesome.

The top pic may be real, or a really good photshopping job. If this is going to be reality soon I would seriously consider replacing my homebrew with it (depending on price and specs of course).

Hopefully a sign of things to come

Hmm... Don't know about you guys, but premade carputers kind of take away the whole fun of doing a carputer project in the first place.

Right now, just having one in your car shows you put a lot of work into it. Building the computer, running wires, mounting the screen, in some cases bondoing, fiberglassing, painting, etc. etc. etc.

Anyone can just go out and buy something prebuilt. But where's the fun in that? It's no longer special. It's like buying a premodded case or something... Sure, it looks cool, but it just shows that you spent money on something. Of course, people in SUV's with huge spinning wheels listening to rap music and talking about "bling-bling" would argue with me on this point.

Even though i dont drive a SUV and my rims dont spin, and my music taste includes everything under the sun except country. I am little offended by your post. Exactly what are you trying to say?

That people who fit your discription are only interested in getting a carputer because its something cool or nice looking to show off? Who cares if you built your carputer yourself or not. Maybe some people actually dont find any fun or joy in putting a system together and are more concerned with it working and using it than building it. The single reason why computers are prebuilt in the first place, just because your sticking it into a car dosent make it any different. Did you build your car part by part? Most likely not, although there are many people who do this as a hoby, they dont flame people for walking into a dealership and driveing away in a new coupe.

This whole "i want to keep carputers special and secret" attitude that keeps popping up everytime someone posts something about someone selling a carputer or some big company (ie MS) trying to get in on the market, is just silly!
And stunts the growth of this still very young market.
I for one cant wait till the market is flooded with carputers and wallmart is even selling them. It just makes everything a lot easier for everyone with a whole lot more choices and flexability to do exactly what you want to do, better and cheaper.

I built my carputer for the same reason a lot of people here did. Because they wanted to have the flexibility of having tons of music, video, gps, and the freedom of a computer to do whatever you like while your on the go.

So since "building" the carputer is where all the "fun" is, why not just take your system out of your car and reinstall everything over and over. Im sure that'll be a blast. You can even start a new sub forum about the joys of installing carputers.

Face it, the title of "I did it first" is quickly overshadowed by the person who did it best, and there will allways be someone who does it better.

                              I agree...

Theres absolutely nothing wrong with buying or building a carPC. Some people here simply have other better things to do than fiddling with their carPC for months and months.

I personally like to build my own things...but thats only because I have some spare time and like what Im doing, without those Ill go straight to a carPC shop and get my one done within some hours.

Sometimes customising a carPC just take too long and by the time it get finished it is already outdated and its time to get a new parts for it. Those who had theirs bought have already been enjyoing theirs from day 1 and some are still there struggeling trying to put it together

But then how do one define building a carPC? did they designed every parts, build them and put them together? or did they just buy the case, m/b, cpu, mem, psu and put them together? Thats nothing to be proud off...that just like assembling a flat packed furtniture.

Give another 5 years times I doubt it very much anyone will be designing a PSU, shutdown controller, relay board, case...etc when they can all be bought ready made in the shop. I only designed my own stuff because the one I need is not "AVAILABLE" at this time.

Trust me no one is going to bother building a carPC in the future...it just wont be economical anymore...and most likely will look crap compared to the one made by the big company. Does anyone in here still have the time to build a car radio/amps for fun? or do you just go out and buy them? This is exactly whats going to happen in the carPC scene in the future.

One thing though...modders are always gonna be around.
