  • External slim cd to usb.

Okay, I'll probably get flamed for this, but here it goes.

I've looked and haven't seen a very small (Not 5.25") external usb casing that will fit a slim laptop style cd-rom and convert to USB.

Anyone ever see one and if they have, it shouldn't cost a crap load?.?.?

    Slimline External Enclosure

Yeah, I'm looking for the same thing. Didn't yield any productive results using . I'm thinking of using a 5.25 enclosure, an adapter (if they exist, I haven't found any yet) and some glued plastic to fill the hole. I could also fit more than one thing in there too, and there would be room for a USB hub and some switches and stuff. Just an idea I'm toying with.

If you don't need the actual case of the enclosure you can use the "guts" of a 5.25". You just need a Slimline CD to IDE adapter. They look like this: Just snaps on and converts to IDE and a floppy power adapter.

That's what I'm looking for! Stylish, affordable, and won't look out of place under the glove box! All for $50 - sounds like a winner!

          Thanks a bunch!

Or, you can get it from newegg for 29.99 plus shipping. They are made by Mapower and it appears to be the exact same model. Theres also a firewire/usb combo for 20 or so more.

                Thanks!

Looked at newegg before I posted and didn't find it. Strange.
Found it this time around though.
Will have to contact the manufacturer though since it seems to use an ac adapter. Would want it to run off USB power which shouldn't be a problem, but...

Yeh, that deltrontech one seems to have the battery built in (so I'm assuming using w/o an ac adapter may be possible). I couldn't find a price though? Anyone?

Now, is there somewhere I can just get the converter board for these things without the case? I know I can go slim-to-IDE IDE-to-2.0, but if I could bypass the IDE, it would be nice.

Also, I got a slim-to-IDE adapter for my tower comp, and it comes with a bracket to mount it in a 5.25" bay, with room for a 3.5" HDD. Does anyone know of a 5.25" mounting bracket that allows you to mount two slim CD drives?

If anyone is interested to know, I asked the manufacturer about running from USB power. Didn't think the slim drives sucked that much power...

                            Dear Sir,

thanks for your interesting in our products,
external silm enclosure should be used with power adapter on USB port,
it only provide 500mA from bus power, for slim CD or DVD,
it is spend at least 1.5A above.
but,the firewire 1394 should not be need power adapter.
