  • Power Off With Key?

When computers are shut down pre-maturely they can easily get damaged. I'd like to know how I can setup my Carputer to shut down on its own after I have turned the key off. I'm going to be installing a Turbo Timer soon and have it setup for 1 minute. So that the car and the carputer can cool down properly.

I'm going to make my own case and I'm going to install a watercool system inside with tons of UV reactive things. The CPU and Hard Drive will be setup with the water cooling system. I'm thinkin about where to put the radiator but I can figure that out. So with the turbo timer, I'd like my system to shut itself down the proper way, with the pump still running until the full car is turned off so it will cool things down.

Anyone know how I can do this?

I'm not exactly sure what Turbo Timer is. But I use the ITPS module(http://www.mini-box.com/itps.htm) to control my carputer's power up & shut down.

Also, there are dozens of power supply related threads in this discussion group. Do a search..

Allot of these questions I have I cant figure out how to put it into a search.

Turbo Timer is a device made for a car that you can set a certain time after the key is turned off and pulled out, that it will keep the car running at idle to allow the oils in the turbo to cool down so it doesn't just stop all flow through the veins of the turbo and let it overheat that way.

unless you're running some powerhouse of a machine, the 20-30 seconds that it takes for the computer to go shutdown won't break it if your water pump is off. the cpu block will heat up but nothing significant.

if you want, since you already have the turbo timer going, why not relay the water pump onto the turbo timer?

Turbo timer: device that keeps track how much your turbo'ed car is in boost. when you "turn off" the car, the timer keeps the car running so that the hot oil still gets pumped around and has a chance to cool. you wouldn't want to just shut off the pump cause then you would have hot oil sitting in the turbocharger.

If it's watercooled, it should be pretty close to cabin temp anyway. Would not even need to cool down.

My watercooled system @ home is just a little above room temp.

Ohh...well I'd still need that ITPS Module...because if I turn off the key, it would turn off the full system pre-maturely, so it wont let it go through the shutdown procedure. Turning a pc off by depriving it of power while its still running is not good for the system. That ITPS module is like a turbo timer for a pc....it would keep the computer running for a full minute after the power of the car is turned off. So it will shut down the system 5 seconds afterwards, and the rest it will keep the power on which should let the pump stay on...this project is going to be soo fun....

Here's what I have planned so far:
                XPC Motherboard
                - Specifications -

CPU Support: AMD Athlon XP / Duron Socket A with 200/266/333/400MHz FSB
                Chipsets: NVIDIA nForce2 Ultra 400 + MCP-T
                Memory: 2x 184-pin DIMM DDR266/333/400
                IDE: 2x ATA133
                Expansion Slot: 1x PCI, 1x AGP 8X
                Audio: Realtek ALC650 6-channel Audio
                LAN: 10/100 LAN

AMD Athlon XP 3200+ "Barton", 400MHz FSB, 512K Cache Processor
Mushkin 184 Pin 1GB (512MBx2) DDR PC-3200 Level One Memory
                Custom Water Cooling System
                Custom Plexiglass Case W/Mirror Tint

The liquid in the cooling system will be died with the blue UV Dye. All the power cords inside will be sleved with Orange UV Sleves. All the data cables will be rounded UV/Green Cables.

The system will not be visible without being powered up because of the Mirror Tint, but when the system is powered up, the UV Cold Cathode bulbs will light everything up inside.

The plan is to make it look like some kind of Nuclear system or somethin you'd see on StarWars/StarTrek/Back 2 The Future lol. I decided to mount it behind the seat against the firewall so I wont have to pull the seat out to show it off.
