    United States Patent 6,711,474
    Treyz , et al. March 23, 2004

    Automobile personal computer systems
    Abstract
An automobile personal computer system is provided. A user of the system may wirelessly interact with merchants, communications facilities, information providers, computers at the home or office, and other entities. Such interactions may involve local wireless links and remote wireless links. Wireless communications may involve satellite transmissions, cellular transmissions, short-range wireless transmissions, etc. Products may be purchased using voice commands or by interacting with displays in the automobile. The automobile's location and functions may be monitored and controlled. Location information and other information particular to the user may be used to target promotions to the user. The user may obtain information on the goods or services available at a merchant while driving and may initiate a purchase transaction for those goods or services.

Yea they list a bunch of those papers from 2000 in this patent. I found the description pretty vague, and looks to try and cover any possible improvements to the current available computers as their own. Not sure how they received a paten on such open description. Kinda like saying a car has 4 wheels and a engine, any changes to this design I claim ownership. Is still very interesting reading.

      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
      BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

This invention relates to vehicle computer systems, and more particularly, to vehicle computer systems such as automobile personal computer systems.

Automobile personal computers are presently available that allow users to obtain driving directions by supplying a starting address and a destination address. Users may also receive e-mail notifications, stock quotes, and traffic information. An open platform operating system has been used on these automobile personal computers to allow users to install third-party applications that have;been designed for the platform.

Although the presently available automobile personal computers provide various useful services, they are limited in their functionality.

It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide improved automobile personal computers and improved automobile personal computer systems.

Sounds like a patent for this site??

How the hell did they issue a patent for this idea? That is the most vague description ever. From that description a cell phone used in a car could be considered an "Automobile personal computer system."

It seems that this patent is geared more toward the 'omnipresent-marketing' concept where they're using your GPS to send you targetted advertising and connect you with local vendors.

              It's still pretty vague, though.

I think I'm going to patent the flying car now.

"A highway-approved consumer vehicle, using some type of propulsion ie: turboprop, jet, rocket, antigravity, inflatable air bag, fairy dust, to achieve a lift of two inches or more above ground level."

When I use my SmartTag transponder to go through a toll, I'm initiating a transaction from my car. Every time you use the drive-through, you are initiating a transaction from your car. I, for one, would love for my touchscreen to let me select my food, rather than relying on the aptitude of someone whose repeatedly proven they are incapable of correctly touching pictures of food on a keypad and putting the corresponding food in a bag.

While I agree that some people aren't capable of both driving and carrying on a conversation with their passenger, I think the patent appliers were thinking of those examples, not picturing the driver browsing Amazon.com or making bids on eBay at 65 mph.
