  • batteries in series ?

    I'm willing to google this myself, but I don't have the keywords to search with.

    I've heard about batteries in series/ batteries in parrallel, I wanted to find out more information about it, but I can't seem to get any comprehensive google hits.

    any help ?

    Ive JUST done a lot of research on this. Series means youre gonna end up with 12x the number of batteries on voltage and overload your system. 2 batts x 12v = 24v output.

      www.doomportables.org has some stuff in their consoles section.
      softmodded xbox, PSOne screen, inverter. simple and effective. Combine with PDA and head unit with aux input, and we're having a wonderful time.

          Series is kinda like Dracos said, but not.
          When wiring in series (load to bat1+, bat1- to bat2+, bat2- to load), you add the voltages of the batteries together. So two 12v in series does get you 24v, but you can also wire two 6v in series to get 12v. Like in a flashlight, where you put two batteries in front-to-back, the light is 3v, as each battery (size AAA to D) is 1.5V.

          When wiring in parallel (load to bat1+&-, bat1+ to bat2+, bat1- to bat2-) you retain the same voltage, but basically just double your reserve capacity. So two 12v in parallel is like one big 12v.

          And just to make it fun, I'll throw this one in, although I don't know what the procedure is called: You can take four 6v batteries, wire them together in pairs in series (12v), then wire the two groups of two together in parallel (bigger 12v).

          Generally, in a car, you don't need series wiring, since the batteries are 12v. But if you need to get creative with battery placement, you could get two 6v batteries (which are smaller), place them where appropriate, and wire them in series.

            what's the advantage ?

            for me personally, the reason I'm considering it is because my stereo's too much for my alternator at times. Would the multiple batteries really benifit me unless I got a new alternator ?

              so many time i see this same thing. Batteries dont power your car when its on. The battery merely gives you crankign power and holds the presets for your stereo. the Alternator is the powerhouse of your car. THEREFORE - upgrade your alt and your problem is solved. no need for all this battery fiddling.

                How is your stereo "too much" for your alternator? Do you have a lot of subs/amps or something (over 2000W)? You may just need capacitors, not blow a bunch of $$$ on a new alternator. If it were really "too much", it would burn out the alternator.

                The advantage of multiple batteries is extended battery capacity. I can run my computer and sound system (about 1000W) at near full volume for about 3 hours without the engine running off of two Yellow Tops. I could watch movies off the computer with the sound just playing off the front two speakers for like 6 hours or more. And of course the simple-but-useful fact that I can just leave my vanputer on when I'm away from my vehicle for hours on end, very useful for trips and errands, and those long USB1.1 file transfers.

                  Yep, the only advantage to have an extra battery is when you are powering things when the car isn't running.

                    not ENTIRELY true chaps, if you connect something DIRECTLY to the battery while the car running ( depending on how much power you are drawing) it is possible to take power off the battery
                    ie: if alt will supply for argument 10 amps ( i know this wouldnt occur) and you draw 20 amps you will actually draw power out of the battery assuming the alt dont blow up

                    if you are really fussed about what is happening to the battery you COULD put a second one in the car with a switch that will swap between the two ( so you only charge one at once but you do have the possibility of using two) if you get me

                    64 meg ram
                    5 gig hdd
                    all in an old bit of metal
                    all for under 20

                    and now a 500watt inverter for 20
                    thats 40 in total
                    not too bad for a noob

                      You are kinda right, but if you are drawing more than the alternator can supply eventually you will end up with a dead battery.

                      The alternator has to keep up with all the stock equipment + keep the stock battery charged. Then you add to the work load by adding amps computer or what ever. Then an extra battery to charge. You must have an alternator that can put out enough to take care of all that, pulling more power that the alternator can supply can only result in a battery that is not being full charged.
                      It's the cake having/eating thing.
