  • USB Hub does not show HD after cold boot

    OK. Here's my situation:

Got a powered USB 7-port hub. Currently attached to it is a SB Extigy and a 2.5" harddrive in a USB case.

I haven't played with the CarPC enough to see if this is just an occasional problem or all the time but from what I've seen, it's all the time. When the computer boots:

    1. The USB Hub, the harddrive, and the Extigy will be shown in the Device Manager

    2. The 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon will be shown in the Tray for the harddrive and Extigy.

    3. The computer will show the Speaker icon in the Tray (because of the Extigy).

My problem is: the harddrive will not show up in My Computer unless it is unplugged (drive is also power through the hub on a second connector) and plugged back in or I remove the USB and power cables from the hub. FrodoPlayer does not see the drive either (that is where all my media is stored).

Any suggestions as to how to make this work? I only have one more USB port on the motherboard. I would like as much low-end equipment to run through the hub so I can use the motherboard port for the DVD whenever I get it installed.

On a unrelated note but maybe someone will know: Why can I not run my Earthmate GPS (with Serial driver) through the hub but it works fine on the board?

    Derek

PS. This is not a Hibernation problem.

How is the hub powered? If it's only getting power from 1 USB port, then that could be your issue...Just a thought

Hmm. Didn't think I had to clarify that one but... The hub is 5VDC. What else do we know that is 5VDC? The red and black wires on a molex connector coming of the PSU. I have the hub wired up to the PSU via a M-Molex connector. Also on the M-Molex connector is the Extigy and my Lilliput (only on the 12VDC side). Everything gets power just fine. Remember, the hub and everything works (just not properly) but Windows just isn't showing the drive in My Computer.

Maybe being on the +5v it's initializing improperly sometimes?

        I know, doesn't make sense...

I was thinking something along those lines. Perhaps running a circuit so the hub doesn't turn on until Windows is booted (delayed circuit) but then I saw the hardware shown in the Device Manager which let me know that Windows does, in fact, see the hardware.

I haven't looked at the Computer Management snap-in to see if the drive is being shown in the Storage section. Will check tomorrow if not resolved overnight.

Generic. EBay special. Works good though. Haven't had any problems with it besides this issue. No drivers were needed on any of the computers I used it on.

                  Looks like a generic pocketec.

I have an idea, maybe you should unplug all your USB devices, boot into safe mode and remove all USB stuff from Device Manager, reboot, let windows redetect all your USB stuff, reboot, install newest chipset updates, reboot, plug in your usb hdd, and test. That's what I'd try first.
