  • How many wires!?!?!?!

    Hey all

Planning my install, and have drawn a diagram of the wiring.... and OMG!
Is it me or is there a lot of wires? PC installed in boot with touchscreen xenarc and IR ps2/keyboard/mouse up front...

So Far, i have worked out:

    LEFT Hand side of car:
12v Power to boot for amps/pc etc
12v switched from ignition to Xenarc and then to Car PC PSU for remote turn on (Allows screen to be on if PC isnt, ie for rear-camera via aux inputs on xenarc)
Front left/rear left speaker cables from boot amp.

    RIGHT Hand side of car:
Touchscreen USB from boot to xenarc
VGA for screen from boot to xenarc
Keyboard/Mouse PS2 cables to IR receiver in dash
Radio signal from antenna cable in dash to boot PC for D-Link radio
Front right/rear right speakers cables from boot amp.

Its insane! My wiring is gonna take ages to get all that laid! I might need a couple of days to get it all wired. Then a couple of days to get the screen installed into the dash! Argh!

Anyone else found lots of cables when doing this?

well considering from what i'v read you only have the basic parts
im sure there are many people out there with twice, if not three times the wires you have

that is nothing. at all. try 3 cat 5's for various relay controls/switches/lights, 2 usbs 3 power wires, plus the 4 gauge on the left side, vga extension, keyboard extension, mouse extension, auxillary line in extension, remote amp on, 4 speaker wires.
CarPC install is starting to come along again...

you could also eliminate a whole lot of wiring if you just ran 1 USB cable and ran the keyboard, mouse, IR, and touch screen off of a hub in the dash

I had almost all that you described as well as I had to rewire my 5 stock speakers becuase the stock stereo that came with my car had a system I couldn't just integrate with )= (Thanks General Motors!)

But yeah I had a whole buncha wires I had to deal with. I also decided to run new 8ga wire from my battery back to my hatch area for power.

I haven't rigged up my camera yet but yeah that will include me pulling my seat out again to run the video cable. So far its still a mess in the back of my car but at least it works!! <g>

Yeh. I got IR keyboard tho. I needed a small keyboard with built in mouse/tracker, and got this for less than 5. Bargain. Just gotta wire the cables to the front.
Might look for an RF keyboard tho. Any suggestions?

                Keyboard/Mouse are PS2, not usb.

You might want to move those speaker wires from the left to right side, instead of running them next to the 12v power lines.

You can also get USB adapters that allow you to plug in a PS2 keyboard and mouse (or the individual single USB-PS2 adapters).

Ooh ooh, and now for the cock... er... cable measuring contest:

                  6x 4ga power (& grounding)
                  - 1 alternator to isolator
                  - 1 to each battery bank
                  - 1 to inverter
                  - 1 to dist block
                  - 1 to sub amp
                  5x 8ga power
                  - from dist block to various accessory banks
                  - from batt to rear 6x9 amp
                  3x 10ga power
                  - 1 15" monitor inverter
                  - 1 from solar panels to charge controller
                  - 1 from charge controller to batteries
                  8x 12ga power
                  - 1 to each TS
                  - 1 to HU switched power
                  - 1 to each amp switched power
                  - 2 to neon
                  - 1 to TV tuner
                  2x 12ga ignition switching
                  - isolator wiring
                  4x 120V
                  - 1 to power strip
                  - 2 extension cords w/ 2 wall warts each
                  - 1 to 15" monitor
                  6x VGA
                  - 1 comp to amplified splitter
                  - 1 splitter to TV tuner
                  - 1 TV tuner to 15"LCD
                  - 1 splitter to Y adapter
                  - 1 to each TS
                  7x RCA
                  - 1 stereo audio from HU to rear amp
                  - 1 stereo audio from HU to sub amp
                  - 1 stereo audio from soundcard to HU (1/8" to RCA)
                  - 2 video from TV tuner to TS input 1
                  - 2 video to TS input 2 (not yet used, but wires extended, probably for camera)
                  2x Co-axial
                  - antenna to VCR
                  - VCR to tv tuner
                  4x speaker wire
                  - 2 amp to subs
                  - 2 amp to 6x9s
                  11x USB
                  - 2 to hubs
                  - 2 hub to each TS
                  - 1 hub to soundcard
                  - 1 hub to GPS
                  - 1 hub to RF remote
                  - 2 hub to game controllers
                  - 1 hub to digital voltmeter
                  - 1 hub to external hdd
                  1x Firewire
                  - external hdd

                  Think that about covers it.

The only ones I didn't personally run were the speaker wire to the 6x9s and the coaxial from the antenna to the VCR (I didn't list the speaker wire for the dash speakers... I've never even touched them). And of course assloads of accessory wires for all the accessories which came with the van, a few of which I've changed/spliced, but mostly they just get on my nerves, since I don't know where they all run to/from.

                      Me: 1 Power wire
                      2 RCA 1 video 1 audio
                      2 USB for input

Yeah! I got the least! At least until I get the PC up and running well enough to add crap.

Invest in hubs, as well as power splitters. (Run one wire, split and fuse it for two things) They cut back on your number of wires.

How am I to do this, if the speaker cable is for the speakers in the doors?????
I have 2 speakers either side of the car, one in each front/rear door. They need to get the signal, and hence need the speaker wire. I have no choice. Whichever side the power goes down, there will be two speakers en route. Standard car design.

                            With reference to changing ps2-usb:

too many usb = too much power draw.
I am aiming for as little as possible. I am already using several usb, and dont want more.

However, is there a max length for IR over ps2? I will have 6m of each cable.
