  • add rs232 port to laptop? help!

Hi guys, just started on my car pc with an old laptop and a trident touch screen kit, i found the old laptop was just to slow to run anything so now have a new one (cracked lcd) this new beast has firewire, 3 usb ports, dvd, and modem/network card built in. problem is my touchscreen kit. the tft plugs into the ext vga socket and 12v supply and works fine but the glass touchscreen overlay plugs into a control board which connects to a rs232 port on the pc which i now dont have! any ideas?

It should, the USB adaptors add a virtual serial port. Unless the software does some low level stuff that interferes with this, it will work.

if you get the usb to rs232, make sure you get a good one that actually created a com port. I bought one from compgeeks for $7 that turns out to only work with palms and scanners, and printers (i think)...I then picked upa belkin that works like a charm.

(By the way, this was for my obdII)

forgot to mention, the board for the touchscreen overlay can get its power through the rs232 line. i presume this is 5v. would this still be provided by an usb to 232 adaptor, i put my tester on my old laptop but it did not give out any power on the pins the manual said. can the output of an rs232 port be altered by the software and does anybody know if this will work via a usb thingy? thanks for the help!
