  • Any companies out there make custom pc cases to your spec?

    [Also posted on digital-car]

    Hi all,

Been researching how to go about installing a carputer into my e36 coupe. Ive got a "vision" and was wondering if there are any companies out there that would make me a custon mini-itx case to my specification. It'll be a weird kinda L-shaped type thing to fit perfectly in the glovebox. And, id like it made out of perspex. Thing is, i need info ideally on companies based in the UK.

I can get a custom box made up by a company i know of but they do not have any kind of expertise on the computer side. Ie. They wont be able to provide the correct mountings or advise me on how the components should be fitted or ventilated etc.

I know people undertake these DIY projects all the time and although i have a basic knowledge of computing, actually fabricating a suitable housing is beyond me. If i select and buy all the components, is there a company out there that can make it up for me? I already have a rough idea what switches/inputs/outputs id like front and rear of the case.

    Cheers guys(and lasses),

    Jim.

do the drawings, or make a mock up out of cardboard and take it to your local plastics shop

should do the trick, otherwise send the above to me and for a small, phenomenal fee I can do it for you

Cheers matey. Im sure theres a company near me that wouldnt have any trouble knocking the box up for me but they wouldnt be able to put the components in for me and therefore couldnt make the appropriate holes for inputs/outputs and switches. Also, as i said, ive built a pc before but wouldnt know how to install the components correctly in a custom box with no mounts.

Go to a local PC shop (not PC world), talk some geek into doing it for you

If you are able to provide the dimensions for your case that will fit your parts to a company that can make up a box for you it seems to me that they could also fit your parts in it as well. Once the box is made then place the parts in and carefully mark/layout/measure the mounting holes and drill some holes in it. Same goes for the port layout as well. You just need to work with them. It will probably take several visits.

Cheers Unc, in case i do go about installing the parts myself can someone please list me a bunch of pointers that i should watch for. Perhaps certain orientation of certain parts? What things must have ventilation (although as i understand it the lower voltages of certain mobos dont even require a fan??)? What things must be insulated etc etc etc.....

            Cheers
