  • Powering Devices?

I just bought a USB hub that I want to put in the glovebox. It comes with an AC adapter that says its 5v. And I'm going to buy a DVD drive that I want to mount up front that apparantly operates on 5v (http://www.pcalchemy.com/product_inf...products_id/44). Whats the best way to power these devices in the car. The power wires in the car are 12-14v, do I have to run a 5v wire all the way from the computer power supply in the trunk to the front of the car???

Yes you have to run a stable 5V from the PSU. You hook a wire up to the 5V line, and a wire to gnd from you molex connectors.

I used a cigarette lighter plug.
      Hardwired 3-port cigarrete lighter adapter.
      It works fine.

What do you mean you used a cigarette lighter plug? Did your usb hub/dvd-drive come with cigarette adapters? Isn't the cigarette power supply 12v? if so how did you step it down to the 5v these devices need?

          Something like this.

This is not the exact model, but you get the picture.
          RadioShack has several different types.

PW-70 has extra wire for +5V output. Anyway it should go from the PSU, not from the car directly.

there's some chip that people use on these forums.. i forget the name, but i'm sure if you search you'll find... it just does what that radioshack thing does basically, without the cig lighter plug (which I don't think you want or need anyways).

So search for it... only a couple of bucks, and should be good enough for what you want.

Are there some issues with using cig lighter plug?
Is that bad for the device?

I'm sorry I didn't mean it like that.. just since he's putting a hub into his glove compartment, he wouldn't want to have a wire going into the glove compartment like that. It'd just look so much nicer by tapping into a wire near there (or ideally going directly to the fuseblock). Purely aesthetics.

                      OK. That make sense.
I actually have my 3 port adapter hard wired behind
console, too. I would hate to see that cig lighter adapter
                      sticking out of dash.
