  • Ram question

    Hey guys,
I'm looking to upgrade ram and heres my situation:

Right now I have a stick of 256mb DDR ram. I can buy 2 sticks of 512MB SDRAM for 29.99 each. (my mobo will use either sdram or ddr)

Would 1gb of SDRAM be better *OR*
256mb+512mb of DDR ram be better

    Thanks,
    Eric

i have a question for you, do you really need that much ram? 256 of ddr would seem fine to me
I have found you an argument; I am not obliged to find you an understanding.

idk - it comes down to the applications you are running in the background.

But for most situations, since we are not using any real time applications except for maybe GPS, RAM will not become a factor. Good way to check in XP is go to the Task Manager and see how much RAM you are utilizing.

I'm pretty certain you've already made your purchase at this point....
                A couple points to note:

1 - DDR stands for double data rate. The name right there says that the RAM is faster. I won't go into the technicalities of how. When DDR first hit the market, there were tests done that showed that half the amount of DDR resulted in more performance than twice the amount of SDRAM.

2 - If you have a mobo that can use either/or, you can't have both installed to take advantage. It's one or the other.

3 - With WindowsXP, the best amount of RAM for performance is 512MB. Some people say 256MB is sufficient. It's 'sufficient', yeah. Considering how comparitively cheap RAM is these days, the added performance boost is worth it.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
