  • Reverse camera query: USB webcam or mini "spy" camera?

I'm looking at the options for a camera pointing out the back of the car.

Is it "better" (=cheaper/quality wise/power consumption wise - take your pick) to plug a USB webcam and use that to feed the video...

    OR

...to use a mini "CCTV" type camera feeding into the composite connection of the Xenarc TFT?
    Have: Via Epia M10000 1GHz|512Mb|20Gb|Slim slot-loading DVD-R|Carnetix P1280|RevCam|GPS|Illum’d keyboard|11g Wifi
Waiting for: Xenarc TFT in-dash (haha!)

The type of camera doesn't matter, really.
Go for the widest field of view possible, however.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Under normal circumstances, a signature would go here.

      not sure about this
very true that itll be quicker as even most vga screens have a composite input but as for better quality surely woildnt a 1.2 mega pixel 800x600 webcam give just as good qaulity?
again its back to field of view

If you use a USB webcam, how do you display the image on screen?

Is there a decent freeware program for displaying a webcam signal full screen?

          Yes quite a few
can also show pixel for pixel too
as you may know most webcams now that use usb2.0 have broken the ega barrier and bow display at resolutions greater than 320x240 @15 fps
most usb 2 webcams can display at 640x480, 800x600 or 1024x768 all at 30 fps ive just ordered one that claims to have 1280x960 at 35 fps we will have to see just how realistic this is when i recieved it.

I don't even know how I'll use a webcam yet. But I got a free one for being a Comcast Internet customer. I figure I should put it somewhere. Maybe I'll have it looking into the engine bay for visual monitoring. Why? Just because I can! haha

Oh even better...have it aimed at the rear brack rotor like they do in NASCAR TV coverage. (Maybe I'm getting a little carried away with this carPC stuff)

I would go for a CCTV kind for one reason only.
I don't have to boot up the carputer or wait for it to boot up to back out of my driveway or any other place for that matter.

Found this site and discovered carputers on 11/25/04

How is the CCTV/composite camera powered?
Can it be connected to an Opus/Carnetix PSU or is it directly connected to the battery?
(This would mean constant power even when the car is not running...)

Can I have 2 web cams set up allowing me to select between 2 different video feeds? (I have two web cams, both of which are sitting on the floor next to me desk collecting dust. Seems like such a waste.)

I mean I might want to watch the engine bay at one point and the next minute want to see how close my tire is to the curb while I'm paralell parking in another!

You might want to consider a way to flip the image so its true when revesing this is easyky done with a webcam but you need a special reverse image camera if its composite.

What would people suggest for a front facing camera? Not fussed about a parking camera, just thought it might be quite cool to have a low to the road image being displayed on the screen like they do with racing cars on the telly. Would therefore want decent quality, at best (lowest) price.
