  • Recommended small 4 or 8 port hubs?

Can anyone point me at some small (& preferably cheap :-) USB hubs. It doesn't matter if it's bus powered or not - either will work. The key thing is size since I need to be able to fit it inside my center console so I have only one (or two) USB cables going to my car PC under the passenger seat. 8 ports is stretching it - two 4 ports will probably fit better but I'm forever hopeful.

Not quite sure where you can find an 8-port, of the reasonably priced, 7 ports is the most out there. As far as 4-port devices go, search www.newegg.com, good prices and good selection. From my experience, there are no differences in the hubs, they all work the same. You might want to pay attention to where where power/usb in are, since some hubs have it on the same side as the usb out, so that might make your installation more difficult or easier, depending on how you want to put it in. My guess is that you want outputs on one side and inputs (power and usb) on the other side, so check out the pictures for that.
      Hope that helps
I have found you an argument; I am not obliged to find you an understanding.

That first one might be ideal if you can get connectors to let me plug into a USB extension cable (or a male->female extension cable).

I'm a little bit worried about using 1.1 usb hubs though. None of my current plans for USB devices require 2.0 connections but I wouldn't want to end up unable to plug something in because it's a 2.0 device.

I am using this one in my car....

It's a very nice one and easy to hack open the power cord to wire to a 5 volt line from your PSU.

These are the ones I liked the look of off newegg (in order of size - small to large - as well as I can estimate from the pictures anyway). All usb 2.0:

              4 port:

              7 port:

I think I'm also now leaning towards ones that can at least be non bus-powered in case I ever need to connect something that needs the full 500mA.

just a quick note: usb 2.0 devices will work f you just have usb1.1, they will just end up working a little bit slower.
