  • I-BUS and BMW Aux-IN

    I have an interesting problem...

When my ibus is hooked up to my laptop, the HU won't recognize my laptop's aux-in... but it will recognize my mp3 player's aux in....

when i disconnect the ibus, it picks up the laptop auxin fine

    Similarly....
When I use the car's 12V to recharge my mp3 player, the aux-in won't recognize the mp3 player.

make sure all devices share a common ground

Good idea, won't all of the different ground wires all be 0V?

So the simplest way would be to use pin 15 (of the head unit) as ground for the IBUS and the aux-in?

AHH, the AUX-in ground (pin 4) isn't the same ground as the rest of the car. I used a potentiometer and the two grounds aren't common. In fact, they have a slight impulse of current when initially connected. WHY?

Can I use the aux-in somehow with the same ground as the car?

You need a ground loop isolator on the
          aux in of BMW.

My MINI cooper required this before they came out with the right Aux In cable from BMW that had the ground loop isolators built in.

            Great

            Ok I bought this.

            http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...ME:B:EOAB:US:6

I'll need to cut/sodder the wiring to fit my stereo headphone jack.
Do you guys have any advice?
I'll let you all know how it turns out.

            Thank you very much.

or you can hook it in by using some adapters from the RCA plugs to a mini stereo plug and the opposite.

Ok I tested it out today. I connected my mp3 player to one end of the GLI, and my headphones to the other end. It works.

But, when I connect the other end to my HU, it doesn't pick up the aux-in signal.

That is wierd! I really don't know why it wouldn't detect the input and give you the AUX settings on your radio. Did you cut & splice or use adapters? the mini plug is stereo right?

I didn't cut or splice the wires, I just hooked it up so one of the RCA jacks on one end connected to the ground and the left channel, and the other side of the cable connected to the ground and left channel of the aux-in.

When I tried this technique, but with headphones in place of the aux-in, the audio I heard was about 70% in loudness than if I had directly plugged in the headphones into the mp3 player.

The only other suggestion would be to try both left & right channels at the same time. Possible the trigger for Aux on the head unit comes from the right channel or both channels having resistance or a load on them? This sure works with the MINI BMW radio's.

                        that worked.

I needed all 3 wires to be connected for the HU to pick up Aux-in.

It didn't work because I was trying only ground and L+.

Awesome! I'm glad it worked for you. I was beginning to think I had led you astray.
