  • Powered USB Hub

Has anyone managed to use a powered usb hub? I am thinking about using one that is powerd from the battery using some sort of transformer.

The reason for this is that from what I can work out most usb devices use 5w (is this correct?) so if you have a few it can soon eat in to my 90w PSU capacity.

I had a search but I couldnt find much about this.
    System:
    256Mb, PIII 533 on a Hyph01 PCI sized mobo (Lan/Sound/GFX)
    M1-ATX PSU
    250GB Hdd

    USB:
    Haicom GPS
    Belkin Wireless

    Case:
Installed in an old NTL box, (best thing for it)

    Screen:
    LinITX 7"

Yes, run the 5V from your PSU, not all your devices will use or need the 5V supply.

THe idea was to use a powered hub so it is not using power from the PSU

If you see what I mean.

kinda simple, but I just extended the power supply cord and plugged it into a powerstrip plugged into my inverter. Works for me.

I have realised that the draw from usb devices is actually really low so this is not a problem, see http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=44687
