  • DC - DC creation

Ok guys i've knocked up a start up shutdown controller.. just sends a start pulse on power and when it loses power it sends another pulse (these pulses will operate a relay that will replace the computers on off switch.

But.. to make this work effectively i need to lose the inverter and have a permanent connection to the dc battery.. i.e. i need a dc/dc power supply but without a startup shutdown controller and i need around 500w.

Not gunna happen in a prebuilt is it so heres the score... where do i begin on designing my own version and making it.. the on/off controller was pretty easy to design really.. just used a logic of house lights.. i.e. the ones where you have a switch upstairs and downstairs to control the 1 light.

It makes sense, lol and it works which is nice .. so that obviously takes its power from the ignition on and then i need the power supply to take a direct battery connection.

But i dunno where to begin on designing it as i've never really done much on electronics.. infact the on/off module is the first thing i ever created.. lol

What system are you running that needs 500W?????????

      athlon 64
      gig of ram
      2 x 160gb hd's
loads of usb bits and bobs...
Touchscreen controlled leccy windows and stuff.
I just want something that will be powerful enough for what i got and expansion.

Save that much power for your desktop.
You could theoretically get this working with a powerful inverter, but there's also a possiblity of damaging the car's electrical system as well. You'd have teh Same issues if you made a DC-DC power supply to handle all that.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
        How about the Wiki?

the inverter runs it fine but then i cant make it turn on/off with the ignition.. well not properly, lol so i need a dc power supply so it can be always connected without having to have an inverter draining the power all the time even when the computer is off if that makes sense.

The computer works fine though off the inverter.. and the reason for it is because its a proper show beast.. nothing for just practicallity all for madness... oh and because its cheaper to do an athlon 64 than a little crappy EPIA

oh and i'll be running 2 batteries anyway so cars power aint an issue.

You don't need anything like that in a car man. I think you are very much beyond the scope of a carputer and you are asking for nothing but problems. Tone it down, run the Opus 150watt and call it good. I don't see any reason to go athlon 64 over a nice mobile athlon XP. Or check out the Mini-ITX P4 possibilities.

its called doom3 at full res.. car shows.. a 15" touchscreen.. 2 17" tfts facing out the side windows in the rear.

Come on just use your imagination... Its called being different and mental and getting noticed.

So any offers on how to do it.

If you really want to run high end 3d games in car i think you would be much better off insalling an xbox along with a toned down carputer. And if you are going to run a pc that takes so much power you will definately need a better alternator too.

you people really dont understand "showcar" do you.

It's to show the extremes of what can be done.. its not my everyday car.. its my "showcar"

So any useful information on making a dc/dc powersupply would be great.

And no i do not need another alternator as with the inverter i have had this running when it was my everyday car.

Just didnt have the big screens.. used a lilli.

The cars happy with the load and also with 2kw of audio gear... but i am doing all the power enhancements i can in this next build.

So just point me in the direction of making a power supply.. thanks

I understand what you're trying to say, no probs on that...

For the DC-DC you should look at the sproggy/mastero powersupply schematics and adjust them for your kind of power.

Personally I think you better use that on/off controller to switch the pc on/off (directly on the ignition) and then use a simple circuit for switching the inverter.

On if ignition is detected, off when pc power-led goes out (that way the inverter stays on until the pc has shutdown properly).

If you haven't done electronics in the past, DC-DC will be very tricky (as people with experience even have a hard time building a good one).

Much luck on your project, and DO post pics!

Ok, I no this is no help for you questions, but I have to ask: Why would you face the screens out the side windows? Even in a show car, shouldn't things be functional to you and your passengers? And please tell me you're not one of those people who wants to drive around playing porn on all your monitors, and you like to "spread the love"!!

There is no such easy way to make a 500W DC-DC PSU.
If there is a way, then the tiny 150W Opus won't be the GOD to most of us carpc users.
There are numerous people on here are waiting for that "Vaporware" Opus 220W for the past couple months (or years).

You are better of buying one of those 1000+Watt VTEC generator to power all your gears.

no im not that sorta person and no the side facing screens wont be on when driving... its a show car so needs to draw attention.. Screens and loud music tend to do that.

and JC-S60.. bloody great idea about the pc power light.. i'll just do that and use the inverter.. I was just having troubles trying to figure how to make the inverter come on with ignition but go off when the pc goes off and not when the ignition goes off... You are a flapping star

You can even add a little capacitor to have the inverter shut off some seconds AFTER the power-led goes off, to avoid trouble.

Be shure to use a transistor to switch you relay (that switches the inverter), as you might burn the motherboard when hooking it up directly to your powerled.

and yeh, I know, I'm a star, it was getting time someone realized it!
