  • Radeon 9800 Pro, Lilliput 7", Resolution....

Sorry if this is a duplicate; Tried posting it awhile ago and it's not showing up, dunno what happened....

I just completed my first carpc install over the weekend, and am overall very pleased. One thing becoming clear is the need to run naitive 800x480...

I have a Radeon 9800 Pro laying around not in use, and am thinking about throwing it in the Expedition. I know it's overkill, but it's not doing anything but collecting dust at this point. Now that I have the system installed and proven, there is already demand for a bigger monitor for the back seats, which the dual outputs would work for...

My question is, can the 9800 do 800x480? I threw it in a desktop, and it wasn't listed as the default resolutions, so not sure if it will do it, or needs tweaking by another application such as PowerStrip, etc? I searched on '9800', and none of the results seemed to address my question directly; Sorry if this information is already covered elsewhere....

Lastly, I know it's power hungry, but can't find any definitive specs... Currently my Opus 150 is running a shuttle sk41g based machine, the lillliput 7", and a usb gps receiver. I'm assuming I can add the Radeon with no problems, just looking for confirmation....

    Thanks in advance!

Yeah, searching didn't provide any specific answers, although some hints. Playing around with PowerStrip is an option, but I've spent the past 36 hours in the front seat of the Expedition, so not willing to go any further tonight. If I don't get a definitive answer here, I'll be trial-by-error'ing it another night or two in the truck...

Funny story on why it's collecting dust... I've never been a gamer, but was sucked in to WoW while at a friends house a few months ago. It completely sucked on my machine at home, so I went and bought the 9800 for WoW. Long story short, my interest in WoW faded after a few weeks, and I was having driver conflicts with some other packages that I use for work, so it was yanked out and has been sitting on a shelf ever since... I figure, since I'm out of pocket a couple hundred for it, I might as well put it to good use... And as of right now, good use is 800x480 to two seperate Lilliputs!

must be lucky to have dough to blow. i had to scrape a few weeks ago just to get a radeon 7000 of ebay to upgrade the one comp in my house that was running off an old and sluggish s3 savage4 card. it aint the best, but it gets it over that "compatibility hump" that the savage4 card seemed to be stopped at with many programs/games.

Take a look at www.rage3d.com. There's a tweaking utility designed for radeon cards that I believe will let you do custom resolutions. Let us know if it works for you.

@momanz: Thanks for the link! I installed rage3d, but the closest it could get to was 848x480...

I installed powerstrip on my amd64 system and threw the 9800 pro in it. I was able to get to 800x480 with no problems, after adding it as a custom resolution.

Tomorrow I'll put the 9800 in to the truck and see what it can do with the lilli.... Will report back...
