  • Katrina's Victim

I got in my car friday afternoon to go take a look at the damage. Got in my car no damage at all or so I thought. I have the laptop in the trunk with a docking station and a automatic turn on circuit. I also just recently added a GPS antenna on the back trunk(outside). I turned on the LCD and nothing... went to the trunk and tried hitting the power button and nothing... It wasn't until I took the laptop out of the docking station that I noticed about half of cup of water escaping from the insides of the laptop. I of course freaked out and immediately disconected it and removed the battery. After this drama I went ahead and took the whole laptop appart and proceeded to remove as much stuff as possible to allow it to dry. I have it sitting in the closet and will try and put it back together and see if it runs. I have no hopes on it working as It did have power running thru it. It is probably fried.

Has anyone resurected a laptop after water damage?

I also suspect that the coperate for letting the water in the trunk of the car might have been the cable for the GPS antenna.

Well I am hoping on getting a laptop on ebay now with a broken LCD. I will probably wait a week before trying to put power thru it again. Do you think a week is sufficient to give it a try?

    Thanks...

Very sorry to hear the bad news. A week is certainly sufficient if you have it in enough pieces. It is almost always the motherboard that water damage gets to in laptops. I have only replaced a laptop mobo once in my entire life and it was for a customer who had waaay too much money. Due to proprietary design, laptop motherboards are usually in the range of $700 - $1300. If you don't replace it yourself, expect labor to be $150. And now I am sorry for being the one dishing out the bad news...

I sent my HP laptop into HP and they fixed it for $250
They replaced the keyboard, the dvd drive, the upper casing, and like three or four other things.
My wireless card hasn't worked since...
No warranty on anything because of the water dmg...

      Stupid slow shipping.

        Great NEWS!!!!

I could not wait a week just to find out that it was not working. So I followed some directions from some website I found about water damage and laptops. I removed everything from the laptop and started with the bare essentials to turn it on. I used the battery first without the AC supply. I ran it without memmory, HD, LCD, Modem and all covers. It powered on and beeped!!! I then placed the LCD in place and memmory. I got all the way to the bios error "no disk drives detected" by this point I was really astonished that it had worked so far. I then proceeded to put in the HD and put the laptop back together.

After all this drama I left the laptop running all night playing frodo on full screen and it did not crash. I think all of the water that might have been left behind has evaporated by now. It seems I escaped this one... not to say it was not a close call.

I am going to have to be moving the docking station somewhere else in my trunk.

I wanted to know if allot of people out there with laptop/docking station setup have placed the laptop in a vertical position instead of a horizontal one???

I am worried that the docking station or the pins in the back of the laptop might get messed up when I hit a bump.

Well thanks allot for the feedback guys...

Were I you, now that you know it works, I'd leave it sitting for a couple of days just out of paranoia. It would suck for some water inside to shift position while you're using it and kill something now. But then again, I'm a very paranoid person.

I am in miami (Coconut Grove to be exact). I left it sitting open for a good four days so but I gues letting it be for a couple days longer would not hurt. I will also be moving the docking station setup to the back of the rear passanger seat just to be on the safe side. We get some awful rain weather down here and I sure as hell do not want a repeat.

            thanks for the feedback...

LOL...consider your self lucky, I had that happen to me and lost a laptop. Why not just mount it against the back seat in the truck in some sort of holder...

I didn't realize four days had passed. That's pushing the limits of even my paranoia.

For the meantime I just moved the antenna from the top of the laptop. I will be putting the laptop behind the rear passanger seat. I will post some pics of the setup when I am done. Thanks for the feedback...

Thanks again UM fan for the program... works great!!!
