  • Almost Done My CarPC, have one issue unresolved

Well months and months ago I mentioned I was building a carpc for my senior project. My final exam is on Sept 14th and then I'm officially done school

Well as you imagine I could not just build a carpc for my Electronic Engineering degree so I mixed it up in order to get faculty approval. I build a panel that works like a tambour on a roll top desk. I build the housing and put the touch screen inside it. The tambour is driven by a screw drive attached to a 12V motor. I build a control circuit and programed an 8051 for the brains. When I start the vehicle the screen opens when I turn it off it shuts concealing the touchpanel. I have a bypass switch along with a push button hidden in my glove box so I can have control over it. 95% of the time I probably will not use the screen but it will come it handy when parking in public places.

I installed the screen housing today in my dash. I installed an audio amp, XMDirect, inside/outside temp, I'm using iGuidance for GPS (hate my receiver though). I customized one of my favorite skins and am in the middle of creating an XM skin for it. Things are running great so far, music is pumpin and all the other stuff as well.

I have one problem remaining that I have not been able to figure out yet. Yes only one left (I think!). I am using a 1G Flash drive for my main os and gps app and am using a USB external hard drive for all my media. The problem is the external drive is not seen by my OS on boot up. I have to unplug and replug for it to recognize it. Once recognized I can warm boot the PC with no issues and the drive is seen. It is ONLY when powering up cold.

Any idea. I have an MII 12K. Any ideas would be great, I am running an nLited OS but I don't think this is causing the issue (everything else works great). Gotta be something I'm overlooking

    Thanks,
    Chuck

I am having the same issue with my MII 10000. There is a USB2 driver I have not tried it yet. I am also wondering if its a Master/Slave jumper thing.

Does your computer take longer to boot (bios screen remains on much longer) as well if the drive is connected?

I haven't payed attention but I don't think it takes any longer. I will try that USB2 driver and let you know how it works this evening. Thanks for the reply and here's hoping that this will fix the problem

Nope, the new drivers didn't do it. What a PITA. This is the only thing I have causing me issues and I'm not sure if it can be resolved. It will only work when I unplug and replug the drive. Works great it just doesn't get recognized on Windows start (coming from a cold boot) but it will get recognized on a warm boot. Wonder if this is a boot order thing or something in the BIOS?

I activated my XMD this evening. I'm hoping the new skin I made for it will work. I made it as clean as possible but I think I am missing some key functions. Still working on it!

Anyone have any other ideas on the USB drive?

        Thanks,
        Chuck

I will play around with it tomorrow as well. Too bad the drivers did not help. Thing is, we are both suffering this BEFORE windows boots up I think. I too checked the BIOS I only boot from one hard drive nothing else.

easy way out .. delay the power on to the HD .. or let the PC turn it on after it boots ..

Not sure how this is the easy way out. How do I go about delaying power? I may be thinking about this much more than I need to. Please elaborate.

If this fails to work I am going to scrap my plans to use a 1G flash chip and just go with my USB drive as the main drive attached to my IDE channel. I didn't want to do this but disconnecting and reconnecting every single time is a real pita.

              Thanks,
              Chuck

                Have you tried the bios.

Or, not sure exactly how to make this work, but could you create a boot disk that will run a .bat file that points at the flash card ?

Sorry, I think I may have confused you. I was planning to use a flash card and hold all my media files on the USB. THis way I can take the USB drive in the house or whatever. But if I can't make the drive work the way I want I might as well make it a permanent drive and just scrap the flash drive idea which was supposed to be my permanent drive in the first place.

I looked at the BIOS but nothing sticks out. Doesn't mean that the answer isn't there I'm just not sure what to change.

                  Thanks,

Have you tried to enable/disable the usb keyboard support in the bios?

Yep I just did. I just can't get this thing recognized on boot up. Driving me nuts. If I unplug and replug all is good.

My old one did that too. Really, the only solution that worked for me, was to just use a different enclosure. My 3rd enclosure finally worked fine.
Its amazing how crappy they really are.
I now use a transcend storejet 20gig. Pricey, but only use 1usb port. It's a 1.8" drive, so no replacing it with a bigger laptop drive. I did find a 2.5" ensclosure that did work though.
If you're interested in a storejet, let me know. I have an extra one.

Hmm looks like we need SP3, a lot of people have the same issue.

OK i got this from Via site again, try this as a temp fix:

                            OK everyone...

I contacted Microsoft about the hotfix, and I got a pretty fast reply.. however, the fix didn't work for me... they told me to try a few more things, and still to no avail...

I am waiting for more information from them right now, and I'll post it when I find out.

However, there is a workaround for using storage devices, either flash or hard drive based.

Flash based devices, when you add them, can be activated by going into the Device Manager, right clicking on the new device and installing the driver automatically... the Mass Storage Device driver should be loaded for them. They should then appear in My Computer.

If it's Hard Drive based, its a little trickier. First, you add the device in the same was as a flash-based drive in the Device Manager. THEN, open the Disk Management tool (Start -> Programs -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management... Then, click on Disk Management on the left).

In there, you'll see your Hard Drive based USB drive. Right click on it and assign it a Drive Letter. Sometimes this makes it show up in My Computer. If it doesnt, you can also right click on the disk and choose "Open" or "Explore".

Sometimes, it will open for a second and then close... if it does, simply open a folder or file inside the device before the window closes, and it will stay open. If you start transfering something, however, it will close... just re-open it again after.

If you absolutely must get stuff off or on your hard drive based device !

Of course, this is a workaround until M$ or VIA fixes the problem...

                            I'm keeping my fingers crossed....

                            Hope this helps someone !

Zip, Interesting. I can try the disk management thing but the drive does get assigned a drive letter once it is seen. The article gave me a couple things to try so I'll let you know how they go this evening.

                              Thanks for the reply.

Knubile, I am running a 2.5" 20G Hitachi ruggedized drive. Do you recall the other enclosure that would have worked. The current enclosure I have is identical to this: http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-2-0-2-5-lapt...QQcmdZViewItem

Thanks for the offer on the 1.8" I don't think it will fit my drive.
