  • heat lock ups?

I know i posted about this months ago, but after fixing the problem... it's back. As a background, i've been running my car computer in its current form for about 3 months. it ran 2 months very smoothly, rarely a lock up. about 1 month ago, i added a powered USB port and ran the power off of an molex power cable. I also added a bluetooth dongle. Well since then, it's been locking up every so often. before coming to the forum about it, i wanted to run through everything i could and gather as much info as i could, so i started logging everytime i used my car and when it locked up. Well after a week or two of this, i noticed that it only seems to lock up on my afternoon drive home from work. This is about a half hour drive. It never locks up in the morning or on short trips to the store. i started thinking maybe it was a heat problem because its warm in the afternoon. I started running the AC on my way home... made no difference. There's two fans in the case, one in one out. I ran SpeedFan a few times to see if i could figure out the temp. In morning it runs between 47 and 49 degrees C on teh CPU and 36 in the case, but in the afternoon it was between 48 and 51. NOt much difference. I also removed the bluetooth device to see if it made a difference, and it did not. Also, if you saw my post about a switch, i started turning of my car computer and turning it back on when it locks up. It would boot up, but most of the time lock up as soon as it was going for a while. This also made me feel it was a heat issue. could it lock up because of a 51C cpu? i read other threads w/ people running theres into the 70 degree area.

While your symptoms do sound like a heat issue, your CPU temps are well within the safe range. I've had a dead video card fan cause locks, so if you're running a card you might check that. The chipset fan too.

try taking some power drain off it & see if the problem goes away... it sounds more like that opus 90 is on the edge of what your running..... & the fact that it started after adding a hub... etc.... leads more to power issues being likely

when the car is off, voltage to carcomputer is 12.6v and current draw is 4.5A. that should be around 56W power consumption. THat sounds well within Opus's range. Does that logic make sense?

only if you assume the opus is rock solid stable to 90 watts.....

check your motherboard, look for swollen and leaky capacitors. i have a MB w/ 7 bad capacitors that freezes when they warm up (no electric flow through them)

I can't see any problems w/ the caps. However, it hasn't locked up in days. Not sure if its the cooler weather we're having or if something else changed. Either way i'm not complaining!

Here in Oklahoma we have such extreme weather, I get to test the CarPC is all sorts of conditions. I've noticed on the REALLY hot days the computer will lock up easily, it will also boot slower. The CPU temp would be around 56 when it would lock up. I'm also using a Athlon Mobile.
