  • Starting Pc via mobile phone.

    Hi all,
Ive got a bit of a problem here. I was going to use a serial relay to start my laptop when my mobile connected to it got a txt. the problem is that ive noticed my laptop doesnt have a serial port... doh!

Basically i want to be able to txt the computer and it send me back information or do certain things. Now I could connect the phone (Nokia 6310i) via a usb cable and that would be fine for the communication. The problem is then how to boot the pc from the phone.

I considered running a wire from the com port used for texts on the phone to a realy which would trip my power cable. but then if i text it again i realised it would kill the pc.

Im out of my depth here but is there anything i could use to do say an if statement? for example... 'if pc = off then power it' etc.

Ive got a spare pcmcia port if that helps, and parallel. its not got a modem so i cant do wake up on ring and it doesnt suppose wakeup on lan.

any ideas would be greatly accepted! cheers fellas

Not sure if this will help you or not but there is a setting in Windows XP under Power Options Properties, where you can control through windows what the power button can do. So you can change that option and have it do nothing so your system won't turn off.

thats quite interesting, i will deffo look into that as then there is the possibility of changing how long you would press the button for. and thus a quick burst from a phone wouldnt change anything.

oooh, i could have quick burst of power to turn it on as normal, and then a hold for 4 seconds to turn off. interesting, i shall research more but that makes a bit of sense. cheers!

I wanna try to do something like this...

I've been thinking of a way to do this via WOL (Wake On Lan)

          Any Ideas?

          Peace,

right, my plan is now the following:

nokia 6310 connected via usb to pc, a cut in the usb cable routes any data through a relay which if detected will flick the power line and start the pc.

then after its started i can send txt commands to the pc.

to shut the pc down i can text it too, no need for the relay.
and to shut it down whilt im in there i just do it through road runner.

            woo.

              Dave,

Can you give us a better idea exactly what your doing/have done to set this up, as it's something that's on my "must do" list! How does the phone/pc work out what is a text to shut it down, or a text to do something??

Any pics or diagrams would be very helpfull,

              Cheers in advance.

                dave, is that a 6310i?

if u have bluetooth, u can power on via cable, and talk via bluetooth. Might make things simpler to communicate via seperate channels. tho bluetooth maybe a little flacky.

How about wiring the ringer to a relay? that way text's can be silent to ignore switching on via sms. and you could control via serial?

                just some ideas.

why not wire a second (normally closed) relay inline with the first and set this to open when the computer is powered up, that way the link to the power button is broke whenever the computer is on and any further texts received by the phone would not trigger the power button.

hey DaveC thanks! you just solved how I will use the IBUS to power my car, rather than the ignition switch! That way when I use my keyfob to open the car, the pc can start powering up. nice 1

I had completely forgotten about this, my project is taking me ages as im slightly lazy

Ive got some software that will command the pc via text but ive not tested it yet. So all the needs sorting is the power on.
                      Info:
                      http://www.gsmsoft.nu/html/engmermmessenger.html

My system is a bit mad in the fact that it will be using 3 phone devices. Ive got my everyday k750i which will be the one i use to talk via bluetooth, the Nokia 6310i which will simply be there to control the pc via text and then there is a Vodafone 3G PCMCIA data card for when i need upload data.

A system im considering sorting is a webcam that takes a pic of the driver once every minute and uploads it to my server via 3g after adding a gps location tag. Thus i know where my car is and who is drivng it. Although i will still need a way to power the laptop.

Ive not really though too seriously about this recently but its on my list of things to ponder. I will have a think and reply in a bit with something hopefully more constructive.
