  • LV 671 Video issues/Screen goes BLACK!! :nutz:

HI! I'm hoping anyone with the LV671 Commell has had or has heard of anyone having this issue; I'm an installer that has used several of these and they all suffer from the same problem...

No video coming from Onboard VGA port, can only go on safe mode and delete display drivers, then boot into normal mode and reinstall video drivers...
THis issue is killing me as it happens every couple of weeks and itz a pain in the azz!! Although it takes 5mins. itz something that is driving me nutz; I have tried all kind of drivers and XP sp1, sp2, and Media Center and same issue.
I have just tried a tip from Giuliano on changing a BIOS setting to set display from Auto to CRT only, let s see what happens, so far it still has happened.
I'm about to contact Commell for support if no one has the same problem.

I've tweaked the BIOS and there is a video output option; instead of AUTO I've set it to CRT, so far no problems.
I'll update if there are any more issues.

FYI - I ended up going with this board, and ran fine for a couple of years, and few months ago, screen went black. Couldn't even boot into safe mode - kept freezing on "mup.sys" file.

So, reformatted today, screen working fine again in the house - haven't tested in car yet. grrrrr

Had that with my Commell board too. Gave up and bought an MSI. Worked great for a while then same thing.

I have concluded it is either the harddrive messing with the video driver files or more likely the screen.

Easy fix, just add basevideo to your boot.ini and it will force boot with windows default drivers. But the best part is if you have the video drivers installed, you can still go into standby/hibernate no problems. So it forces good drivers, works every time. Easy hassle free.

I contacted Commell and they gave me this Changlish fix:
                Hi

Kindly provide the message and check the setting as below:

                1. provide mainboard model name for our reference.

                2. provide all devices that test with mainboard.

                3. What is the BIOS setting
                (A) Advanced Chipset Features => VGA setting => Boot Display
                (B) Advanced Chipset Features => VGA setting => LCD Type

                4. When system load into Win XP but the screen black:
Try to press : Crtl+Alt+F1 for VGA Restore
                Crtl+Alt+F3 for Panel Restore
Crtl+Alt+F4 for DVI Restore to try.

Since then I reinstalled latest drivers from Intel's website win2k_xp141950.exe and so far, so good (1 week) but this can happen at anytime so I'm not surprised if it happens again.
Question: How do you add /basevideo if you can't boot into windows? I'm guessing by going into safe mode? But if I do that, I just uninstall/reinstall drivers.
Are you still having same issues with MSI board? So, does this mean that it's an issue with Intel Graphics ?

What do you mean "the screen" ?
I dont' think the monitor would cause that effect, let me know your opinion. When it happens I usually transfer to a regular CRT and I get the same problem. Maybe if there were drivers for the Lilliput monitors ?
What Graphics card do you have?

If you have an analogue CRT (the one that doesnt even use all on the pins on the VGA connector) it works 100% all the time. When using a digital endpoint, like the lilliput, it doesnt.

Judging that 2 motherboards with 2 sets of completely different components (everything from power supply to ram to cpu and even case) have the same problem, it is either a) the wiring or b) the screen. Wiring would just make a fuzzy/wazy image. So it is the screen.

It is standard issue GMA950 using standard Intel drivers. But it doesnt matter because I put it in base video mode like I said.

Easiest way is to use msconfig and check the basevideo box.

THe way I did it was to manually edit the boot.ini file and just add "/basevideo" and the end of partition {0} or whatever you boot from.

Ok, that's a good non-solution solution, but I'd still like to know why it happens only in these Intel boards; although I have a Boser board that also has Intel graphics and I never get any of these issues; so it gets more baffling by the second.
Btw, it never happens on VIAs.
Meanwhile, I'll keep testing with these new drivers and I'll keep you informed.

                          Really?!!
I have over 50 boards out there, because of my business, and I've never had it happen on a VIA, only Commell's; that's why I only use VIAs now.
When it happens to one of my customers, I usually just swap it for a VIA.
