  • IDE / DVDROM issues

anyone know what might be the causes of these symptoms?

    i have tried:
switching ide cable --no luck, cable good
switching to a 5.25" dvdrom --works, ide controller good
testing slim dvdrom on home pc --no luck

so basically, i think i have it narrowed down to either a faulty IDE/CDROM adapter, or a faulty DVDROM unit. problem is, i have no other adapters or slim cd/dvdrom units to test with, so i do not know what part to replace.
they worked fine on the first day i tested them, and then..kaput.

system setup is what you see in my sig, except i am using the onboard morex psu until i get the system moved into the car.
dvd drive is an LG DVDROM. i have tried reseating all the cables and adapters. no luck. no hdd installed, cdrom only. i have tried disabling the other ide port, switching between IDE0 master and IDE1 master, and setting first boot device to CDROM, all boot devices disabled.

Since you know the IDE controller is good, I'd try replacing the slim-IDE adapter first. It's the cheaper of the two.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

yeah..i was thinking the same..but i might just take this as an opportunity to replace the drive itself as well. the drive has a contoured bezel which doesn't match the lines of the 3688 case. the pc is going to have a theater/car pc dual purpose, so i need to consider looks.

the drive is used, the adapter is new. is it common for adapters to fail this quickly? do they tend to fail quickly if the plug has been reseated numerous times to get a good fit?

it's really hard to diagnose this problem without spare parts because i can't figure out which part is the culprit. at least the ide controller isnt at fault..that would be expensive

in the meantime, i think i will be preparing the system with a 5.25" DVD drive to install the OS and drivers, and get everything loaded through ethernet afterwards.

Are you putting the drive inside the CarPC case or this is going to be mount it in the dash?

inside the case. it's going to serve as a car/home theater dual purpose, so i need components in one unit as much as possible.

just for the record, the drive interface was bad. i got the new drive in and used the same ide/cdrom adapter and it worked perfectly.
