  • My Aopen Pandora Just arrived!

    Hello all,

My pandora just arrived and boy is it small. I have about 75% of the stuff I need to set up the carputer. I'd set it up now, but my CPU is in transit. I still need a Mini PCi Wifi card, USB hub, USB soundcard, and various cables.

Hopefully I will get this thing set up sometime next week.

    Best regards,

    Marc

Good to hear. I agree, the Pandora is incredibly small...even smaller than I expected. Its size makes it easy to fit into creative places in your car! I'm going to flush mine into the lower dash area of my civic.

You should start a worklog so we can track your progress!

Wish my CPU was here allready!

      Hey Quack,

I just checked out your worklog and it looks as though our carputers will be similar, although the mounting different since we have different cars.

I have a 2005 Mazda 6 Wagon and I intend to put the Pandora in the armrest center console where a cargo space is. The Pandora will fit in there perfectly, but I need to remove the current internal box that is there since it is sloped where a Power socket is. I will remove the center console and remove this plastic housing and replace it with a way to hold the Pandora as well as make it removable if I ever decide to use it elsewhere in the house or for updating.

My screen will go in the map pocket on the dash and I intend to automate it to open and close and reveal the screen.

I plan to use my stock head unit rather then a new install at the moment. I want the car to look stock from the outside. I am sure I will be giving up some audio performance with the stock radio, but it sounds pretty good now so hopefully I wont get the bug to change it too.

Good luck and i willmonitor your progress since I figure we both will be running into the same hardware software issues as we progress.

      Good luck,

      Marc

Congratulations to both of you - I'm hoping to be another Pandora member in a few days. My question is this - I'm sure both of you read Kalt's thread on his Pandora setup, so what are each of you planning to do with the problem of displaying 800x480 resolution with the chipset on the MB? I think a few people just deal with slightly distorted screens... Or do you all know of a way to make it work?

        Thanks!

Don't know yet what I'm going to do about the resolution. I want to get everything setup and see the issue for myself before I tackle it. I should see it for myself over the next day or two. I got the PC up and running with windows installed last night. When my wireless card gets here later today I'm going to install the touchscreen drivers and get the 7" lilliput working with it.

On a side note, I can see how the little blue power/activity light on the front of the box is going to be annoying. The light itself won't be the problem...it's going to be annoying when a girl gets in the car and goes nuts over the "cute little blue light" instead of the carputer install . I used to have a GTI VR6 with all the bells and whistles and the only thing they could find to say about it was "the blue lights (on the dash) are so pretty".

            Hey Quack,

Great to here you got the computer up and running. I am still waitong on my CPU to arrive in the mail. Some ebay vendors blow for communication. I hope itarrives this weekend.

As to the display issue, the only problem I had with the pandora was the fact that you could not get 800x480. Althogh the pandora did everything else I wanted and then some for less then a via SP13000 setup. I figured the only downside was still worth it and Kalt said it looked fine on his screen. He also said many people have been pushing for drivers to get the 800x480 that I asume it will arrive in the future.

Did you get the aopen Wifi card or are you planning to use a USB wifi?

Keep us updated on your progress.

            Marc

I got the Aopen Pandora wireless kit which is a miniPCI card and an antenna. Should show up on my doorstep today. I got it from excaliberpc for $39. Looks like they raised the price a buck or two.

Don't know about the make/model for the optical drive.

Hey there thrmaln, I have a Mazda 6i. I know exactly where you plan on placing your Pandora box.

Hey, let me know how hard or easy it is to remove the plastic storage console. Pics would be great.

So question, if there is already an existing 12v cigarette lighter in the center storage console couldn't I just tap into it with a Carnetix P1900?

                    Hey Yamamotosama,

I plan to set up the carputer on the bench and get it fully working before I instal it in the car so it may be a few weeks before I tackle the car instal. As for the cigarete lighter in the pocket, yes there is one on mine. Does your 6i have one? Anyway, I am unsure if it has a connection that is on all the time or with the key. I believe it is on all the time since it is for an accessory rather then a lighter. Either way, if thee is room I plan to tap into it there. I need a connection of on all the time and keyed only so whichever it is not, I will find under the dash.

I plan to tke pictures of everything i do as well as make brackets to hold everything.

I wil start a worklog soon and you can monitor it to track my progress.

                    Best regards,

                    Marc

Oh dear God YES, I will be watching your setup. We have essentially the same car and I am going down the Aopen road as well. Yes, in my center console I have a cigarette lighter located in the compartment's front. I'll take a pic later for you.

I was trying to search through your earlier posts but I couldn't find the answer. So as I understand you will be keeping the stock HU. Did you go for the Auxmod? I'm on the waiting list for the new Auxmod. As soon as I get the Auxmod I will buy the rest of the parts. I figured the prices might drop when I actually get the Auxmod.

So the more I read about powering the carputer I am getting the feedback that to provide the best sound and hardware functioning quality one should take power directly from the battery. I keep reading about how inverters (the ones you can get from Walmart, Target, etc. that plug directly into the cigarette lighter and have a normal three pronged outlet) create electrical noise for the carputer system. That's why I am inquisitive on whether you were going to plug in directly to your storage compartment's cigarette lighter and what your results will be. I was planning on going this route until I read some of the drawbacks. I might give in to the Cartenix P1900 and just run a power line from the glove compartment box (I plan on placing the Pandora there) through the firewall, and into the battery. Just kinda apprehensive about the whole power thing. First time for me. The Walmart-ish inverter just seems so easy.

Anways, where are you planning on installing your LCD? I plan on installing mine in the map compartment above the stereo unit. I always wondered whether with a little modding if I could fit an 8" screen there.

                      God speed! Please work!

                        Hey Yamamotosama,

Your best best is the carnetix supply since it will also act as your shutdown controller. As for running a direct hot line from the battery, I a have not decided that yet. I want to see what the power is on the Cig lighter in the pocket. You dont need to take a picture of yours since we have the same car.

Do you have your Pandora yet? It will not fit in the glove box too well. I looked into putting it there and it fits on the far left, but you still need to modify the box to make room for the wires on the back of the Pandora. I am looking for more of a stock setup where it will not look like I have added anything. Your best bet is the auxmod and I found a used one since I could not wait.

As for the LCD, I am using a 7". A 8" would only fit if it were a 16:9 aspect ratio and it would require modding the map door to open more. As it is I need to mod mine to allow a 7" to fit. The problem is the height and not width. I also plan to make my map compartment automated and I am currently working on the design. If all goes well, I may offer all the brackets and automated map pocket as a kit designed for a Pandora.

I have been working on the design each nite after work and hope to get it figured out soon

                        Best regards,

                        Marc

What kind of boot times are you guys seeing with a clean install of windows xp? Resume from hibernate times? I have a MX13000 and it takes twice as long as my laptop with the Pentium M processor. Both have 512MB of ram. I'm thinking of switching.
