  • two aux inputs --> 1 switched aux input

ive seen threads about this here and there but none that really gave me an answer.

basically what i want to do is this: i want to be able to switch audio inputs between my sound card, and an ipod with the flip of a switch. will this setup work?

Unless you plan on running mono sound then your plan will not work. You need triple pole triple through for stereo sound.

Rather then going through the hassle of soldering and stuff, get something like this: http://electronicsusa.com/mk1and2.html. It's relatively inexpensive.

how will it work with a 3p3t then? what would my wiring look like? (a diagram would be great but if no one has the time on their hands its ok) and how could i make it stereo?

27 bucks shipped still seems a little high for something this simple

Each sound source has three leads: left, right, and common (ground). Notice the RadioShack 42-2550 you've included on the first post: the white RCA connector has a pair of leads (hot and ground), red has a pair (also hot and ground). The ground leads are bound together while the two hot leads are kept separated.

i cannot even find a 3p3t switch -pretty sure they dont make them. anyway, if i were to wire this up using a switch, how can this be done?

I haven't been able to find a triple pole switch as well....only found some more "commercial" type switches, not something you'll want to put in the car.

What about this: (hopefully someone w/ more electrical knowledge will chime in here), but, can't he still use the DP switch to switch the left/right signals and just tie all the grounds together? Technically speaking he doesn't have to be able to switch grounds since all the equipment will be sharing the car's ground anyway, right? Or are the audio outputs isolated in some different way.

              Hold on guys!

his plan WILL work fine, all he has to do is connect the ground (shield) from all three cables together. They do not need to be switched. The poles of the switch will control left and right signals.

you'll need to get a relay. i have a 4p3t relay sitting right next to me that i used in a simlar situation when i wanted to switch between my cd changer and my ipod, so i know they are available.

just use the toggle switch to switch the relay

sorry please excuse my noobish experience with electrical what-not, but im pretty sure i know where put the six total left/right wires, but where do i put the 3 twisted together grounds, and moreover, where do they come from? are they in each wire or what...

You'll see what we're talking about when you cut into the wires. Your diagram is a little off because each of the cables coming from those 1/8" stereo plugs has a center conductor and an outside shield. The outside shields are want you could probably tie together.

Best image I could find of the wire should look like (will probably be a little different), in my mind this should work, but hopefully someone else will comment, may thing I'm worried about is if this will cause any extra noise by tying the grounds together.

you'd need a spdt switch. 12v on one pole the other pole would go to the 4p3t relay. when you flip the switch, giving the relay 12v+ it will switch over.

                            take a look at this:

Your average cable will look like this.
The gold/copper coloured wires are grounded shielding.
