  • Do I have HDTV reciever??

I got a digital freeview digital reciever (usb dongle)
Some of these sold on ebay is "hdtv", mine did not say that, is it still the same ? The dongle look identical, just different colour. Maybe digital recieving automatically means its hd?

Digital television signal is not necessarily HDTV. An HD signal is a digital signal.
It ****ed me off that satellite TV services make this claim about all digital, when it relaly means nothing. With a digital signal, it's either on or off. You see the broadcast or you don't. With analog signals, you can see a broadcast if there's a weak signal, albeit with static or 'snow'.

Now, is your USB dongle thingie capable of handling HD signals? I have no clue.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Under normal circumstances, a signature would go here.

      this is hdtv featured:

      This is not:

(Them with hdtv all say that it got a hdtv-player and I´m not even sure if I have any reason to have hd in my car. Just that it would be sad if, when they start with hd-broadcast here in sweden, makes my usb-dongle unable to show mostly black screen all the time when I want to watch tv)

HDTV is primarily about pixel resolution, and not signal. Video is encoded in HDTV spec resolutions into MPEG2 (or other) elementary streams. These are combined into program streams and multiplexed and modulated as a DVB-compliant broadcast in this case.

So you want a DVB tuner card, is what it boils down to.

For the cards you are looking at it comes down to the drivers, and if the card can process the stream onboard or use the CPU (you want the former). If you are using windows and the stick has directshow drivers that don't suck, then theoretically any application that supports directshow will be able to play the HD and SD streams (VLC, ...).

Ok, but when talking about car pc on a 7" screen I cant have any advantages of hdtv so I dont care. I just wanted to be prepared for the future. If I can choose from 2 sticks and one is said to support hdtv and one not (but same price) I wanted to know if I will be stuck with no picture in case of a hdtv broadcast.

But it´s a matter of software drivers then... that is item specific or universaly adapted to any dongle?

Note that I am using a laptop so I dont have room for a internal dvb-card, only dongles.

With a faster PC than the one you have you will be able to decode HD and show it in a reduced resolution @ 848x480. Its not perfect but at least you have widescreen 480p.

If you are stuck without a picture, then it is because the drivers suck. Those cards are both from taiwan and their prices are dirt cheap, so what do you think that spells out? I would email the manufacturer or go to their websites, pull down the technical docs, and see if a. they use directshow and b. they can decode hd resolution program streams in software via their software.

If you can afford to power the box and have the space available then I would go with a powered usb 'brick' tuner that has an internal mpeg2 decoder and will offload everything from your PC.
