  • 512MB PC3200(400Mhz) vs 1GB PC2100(233Mhz)

This is not for my carPC but I am curious what is better... Less Faster Memory or More Slower memory

I currently have two sticks of RAM in my desktop:

    1 PC3200(400Mhz) 512MB
    1 PC2100(233Mhz) 256MB

The computer assumes the speed of the slowest.. Therefore my RAM is running at 233Mhz... Would it actually be more beneficial to remove the 233Mhz stick?

And is memory speed even a big deal? Can you actually see a difference between 1GB of 400Mhz vs 1GB of 233Mhz?

For Hibernate go with the 512MB of 400MHz, for just normal Startup/Shutdown of your pc as your method then go with the GB of RAM.

        1) The speed of ram runs at depends on your MB front side bus (FSB). If FSB runs at PC2100 speed, any ram you use will run at that speed. We need more information regarding your MB FSB and CPU.

        2) Depends on how much your memory your computer is using. If it's more than 512 MB, using just 512 MB will be much slower, because extra data will be cache onto the HD which kills performance. If it's 512 MB and under, faster ram would be better. Today, 1GB is prefer / standard. Thus, I am thinking 768 MB > 512 MB overall.

My mobos FSB is 800Mhz but it says it only supports up to PC3200(400Mhz) DDR.

I think I am just going to buy 2GB of PC3200 and convince myself it is worth the extra cash then I wont be thinking "I wonder if my computer could run any better"...

FSB 800mhz / 2 = 400 mhz (PC3200), but obviously, you are not running at 800 mhz FSB while also using PC2100. What's your CPU? Also, what's the name of your MB?

1GB is the sweet spot. 2GB is for gaming or if you do graphic and video editing.

I am running Windows Vista which has a bigger footprint than XP so I opt'd to just get the 2GB. Its also doing dual duty as a media center pc, so I am hoping the extra ram will help in recording TV and simultaneous desktop usage while being accessed by an extender

Its an AMD64 3000+, Mach Speed Venom s755 MAX motherboard

              Thanks for the info.

2000 Sunfire build 100%, or is it ever really 100%?

I am not running it on my carPC. Its stable enough that I no longer dual boot with XP
