  • Mini Buttons that "glow" in the dark??

Perhaps you want some small buttons to mount on teh front of your mp3player or computer case, so you can see then at night... Well, what about LEDs???? mount a led on the front of the buttons??? could it be done, this would be great. too bad if it can't, I just made one, singe button really messily using hot glue and stuff, it works well though, sorry, no pics..... I drew up a diagram though.. what da ya think???

Looks like a good idea to me. I would suggest you make little loops in the wires running to the LED. It doesnt seem like much but i can say from experience that it will be the diff between the wires lasting weeks and years. It spreads the strain over a larger area.

The LED leads are not meant to take strain like that, with or without loops... they will crack over time. What you can do is not connect the leads down to the board directly... instead have some wires that run from the led leads to the board... wires are flexible, and they will allow movement.

I believe that was how he ment it to be. The grey lines are the leads, and thin black are wires. If you hot glue it to the button it would take the stress off the leads themselves. I would use wide-angle LEDs myself since they have a flatter surface. But in all it is a great idea.

you might want to look at putting some sort of guide along the side of the led. like a shaft that the "bulb" can slide through. otherwise you might run the risk of mis-aligning the bulb as it comes back up and it might miss the hole and get stuck within the body of the button.

looks like some intricate work also!!!!

          good luck

Yeah, but they're pretty industrial looking. I've been on the lookout for sleeker looking lighted momentary switches, but have yet to find any.

I've been looking around radioshack's site for quite a while and can't find these switches. Does anybody have any pics?

Nah, the guides are not nesiscary, The leds only push in about 1/2 - 1mm at the most, and this isn't far enough for the LED to "pop out" of its mounting...

Not to sound like a prude, but you can buy these from any local electronics store for a dollar or two...Or they can special order them...

To me anyway, half an hour of my time to build these things is worth much more than $2.

I searched through digi-key and couldn't find any lighted buttons (sic)

Any ideas what to search for? I was looking for (Surface mount) momentary switches
